Joseph Maier shared thisI had the honor of sitting down with Stephen Park, and I must say...it was a conversation that made me reflect deeply. We dove into my journey...from flipping burgers at McDonald's to becoming a Green Beret, to rationalizing Samsung’s franchise network, and now leading F45 Training and FS8 - Pilates. Tone. Yoga. in Korea. It’s been a wild ride and Stephen really helped bring out the best parts of the story. I had a moment where I thought about my 15-year-old self, from middle of nowhere, Texas...never could I have imagined that I’d be building a franchise network in Korea. It feels surreal, and hearing it laid out in this interview made me reflect on how far I’ve come. If you don’t know Stephen, he’s the brilliant mind behind Asian Boss, a YouTube channel with over 3.8 million subscribers. Asian Boss has done phenomenal work bridging the cultural gap between Asia and the rest of the world, covering everything from societal issues to business insights. Stephen’s latest channel, Boss Code, dives into entrepreneurship and leadership in Asia, topics I can personally relate to as I’m constantly learning how to be a better leader in the face of ever-evolving challenges. Thank you again to Stephen Park and Sherry Zhao for the opportunity to share my journey with the community. You both are doing amazing work, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!Joseph Maier shared this🔥 From Flipping Burgers to Leading a Fitness Empire in Korea! 🇰🇷💪 Never thought I’d learn so much about franchising, business strategy, and scaling a global brand—until we sat down with Joseph Maier, the mastermind behind some of Korea’s biggest fitness franchise expansions. Joseph Maier shared thisIf you’ve ever done business in South Korea, you know it’s a high-stakes, high-intensity market. And in the fitness space? It’s a full-contact sport. The competition is fierce—not just from global brands, but from an endless wave of copycats who "benchmark" (read: duplicate) what we do and sell it for a fraction of the price. Add in a healthy dose of critics who seem to have a full-time job talking down on our brand and team, and let’s just say…it keeps things interesting. Jamie Yejin Kim deals with it like a champ! But despite the challenges, F45 Korea is growing—and for that, there are a few key players to thank: F45 Training HQ & Tom Dowd – Your unwavering push for franchisee support and strategic leadership give us the firepower to push forward. The trust and resources you provide have been instrumental in expanding F45 Korea, despite all challenges. If you have a passion for helping others live happier, healthier lives, there’s no better way to start your entrepreneurship journey than with F45. This brand is built for those who want to change lives, build strong communities, and thrive in a business that truly makes a difference. Luke Armstrong is your guy. He truly cares about our team and our success and is always fun to catchup with. Our F45 Training Korea Team & Franchisees – You are the heartbeat of this business. Every single day, you show up with passion, grit, and determination—even when it feels overwhelming. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and the energy you bring to the brand is why we continue to grow and succeed. Many people visit an F45 studio in Korea and tell us the energy is next level! Sure, South Korea is an intense battleground, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. To our supporters—thank you. To our critics—keep watching. We’re just getting started. 😉Korea’s fitness paradox: Gyms are closing, but boutique studios are thrivingKorea’s fitness paradox: Gyms are closing, but boutique studios are thriving

Last year, the low-impact modality saw a 92% YoY spike in class bookings, with Yelp searches up 25% and “Reformer Pilates” topping TikTok trends. Loyal followers swear by its benefits, with studies showing it aids weight loss, lowers blood pressure, speeds injury recovery, and more. Riding the hype, XPOF-owned Club Pilates swelled to 1K studios, BODYBAR Pilates notched 1,192% revenue growth since ’21, and Studio Pilates International is entering its sixth country this year. Offering fresh takes, other companies are scaling new forms and strategies. — Mat-based Pvolve is layering on community activations — Les Mills International is licensing music-driven programs to gyms — Lagree Fitness HQ and [solidcore] are reinventing reformer classes — Aussie-born STRONG Pilates uses proprietary rowing and cycling hybrid reformers — BODYROK, JETSET Pilates® Pilates, and F45’s VAURA Pilates up the athleticism Beyond the studio, Flexia, Frame Fitness, and Reform RX launched smart versions for the home. Joseph Maier shared this🔴 🔵 One of our franchisees came up with the brilliant idea to coin 4/5 (April 5th) - F45 Day. 🔴 🔵 Our team ran with it and pushed our network to show their love for the F45 community with great success. This community is the reason we continue to grow! Despite the Korea macro environment, I'm proud to announce that F45 Korea has shown incredible resilience and growth. Our same-store sales in Q1 2024 are up by 24% compared to the same period last year. 📈 Additionally, the F45 Korea network as a whole is up an additional 2.7B KRW (~$1.98M) for the quarter as compared to last year. This growth is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team and the unwavering support of our amazing community and franchisees. But that's not all! 🚀 I'm thrilled to reveal that on the heels of this success, we will soon be introducing a new modality to the Korean market: FS8 Pilates, Tone, Yoga. 🧘♀️ This expansion represents an exciting new chapter for us, and we can't wait to bring even more innovative fitness options to our valued members. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey so far. Your support and commitment continue to drive our success, and we couldn't be more grateful. Here's to many more milestones ahead! 💪 #F45Korea #FitnessSuccess #FS8Launch #Innovation

Ten locations later, the thing I’m proudest of isn’t the number, it’s the team that got me here. To my District Managers, GMs, and crew who show up every day: this milestone is ours to share. To my parents, who believed in me from day one, I couldn’t have done this without you. To the team at Jersey Mike’s corporate, thank you for the partnership and support every step of the way. To every customer who’s made us a part of their routine across Greater Central Massachusetts, I look forward to continuing to slice and grill fresh subs every day. Ten down. Greg Flynn (Flynn Group) is now reportedly the first franchisee billionaire in history, running over 3,000 locations across seven brands and three countries through Flynn Restaurant Group. The International Franchise Association just inducted him into its Hall of Fame alongside Ray Kroc and Colonel Sanders. While everyone was betting on the next big tech exit, Flynn was betting on people showing up hungry. Every single day. There are 850,000 franchise establishments in the U.S. generating 3% of GDP and employing 9 million people. McDonald's alone has created more millionaires than almost any company on earth. Today we officially opened our 18th KidStrong location in Nanuet, New York. 🎉 When we opened our first center, the vision was simple: create a business that positively impacts kids and families while building a scalable, sustainable platform driven by great people and strong culture. Five years later, that vision has grown into 18 operating locations across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, with additional centers already in development for this year. What I’m most proud of isn’t the number 18. It’s the team behind it. ❤️ To Lori DiMatteo COO, our Area Managers , General Managers, Assistant General Managers, coaches, support staff, corporate partners, franchisees, landlords, vendors, and the thousands of families who trust us every week—thank you. Building a multi-unit platform is never about a single person. It’s about creating systems, developing leaders, maintaining discipline, and staying committed to the mission through both the challenges and successes. A few milestones I’m particularly grateful for: ✅ 18 centers open ✅ Thousands of families served weekly ✅ Multiple states and markets developed ✅ Strong growth strategy ✅ Strong unit-level economics ✅ An exceptional leadership team continuing to grow The best part? We’re just getting started. 💪 Excited to celebrate this milestone today and even more excited about what the next five years will bring. #KidStrong #Leadership #Franchising #Growth #MultiUnit #Entrepreneurship #BusinessGrowth #Teamwork #Nanuet

Joseph Maier liked thisJoseph Maier liked thisThe Economist just made the case for franchising that I've been trying to articulate for years. This article argues that franchising has created more millionaires than almost any other business model in American history. McDonald's. Hotels. Pilates studios. And now, maybe, the first billionaire franchisee. Here's what the article gets right: 1. Franchising works because it aligns incentives at the unit level. The owner lives in the community, knows the clients, and has real skin in the game. 2. Transparent disclosure rules, introduced in 1979, are a big reason the model scaled. When franchisors have to show their math, the bad actors get exposed and the strong systems attract better partners. This is why we began publishing franchisee financial information down to store level EBITDA. 3. The biggest threat to the model is overregulation - specifically, proposals that would make franchisors joint employers of their franchisees' staff. I've been on both sides of the table. I've invested in franchises. I've operated as a franchisee. And now I'm leading one as a franchisor. The thing the article captures that I'd underline: the franchisor's job is the brand and the product. The franchisee's job is the community and the execution. When those roles are respected, both sides win. We relaunched Boardroom's franchise program last year after a decade-long pause - not because franchising is trendy, but because we had proven the unit economics and built a model worth replicating. And most importantly, we treated our franchisees as partners. If you're evaluating franchise opportunities right now, the Economist piece is worth your time. And if you're curious about what we've built at Boardroom, I'd love to talk. It's time to build. Thanks Glenn Gow for the forward! https://lnkd.in/g2YqpAXN
