Madison Richards liked thisAs a native Staten Islander, I've been so excited for this series and have learned so much from Benjamin Naddaff-Hafrey, who has done an unfathomable amount of research, writing, and work to bring it to life. Kudos to him, Lucie Sullivan, Nina Bird Lawrence, Jacob S. and Karen Shakerdge on a fascinating and relevant show and everyone involved in getting the word out! (And Shawn Carney for making perhaps my favorite show art of all time.) It's fun to work on a project about your hometown! Netflix is making a serious play into video podcasts - that much is obvious. And they’re going straight after YouTube’s current dominance in the space. It’s becoming clearer by the week: they’ve already announced a partnership with Spotify for video distribution rights. Reports say they’re now in talks with iHeartMedia for something similar. And just yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter said Netflix is reaching out to WME, UTA, and CAA to lock up top podcasting talent. But here’s what’s interesting: From what I can tell (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong), the initial Spotify deal only includes podcasts produced by Spotify, not those that just distribute through it. Which raises a huge question: Will major Creators actually keep their content off the world’s largest free video discovery engine just to be exclusive with Netflix? Because, to be clear, that’s still YouTube. YouTube’s huge value prop for podcasters remains: 🎯 It’s where both existing and potential audiences already are 💰 It offers ads monetization on top of native brand integrations 📈 It drives long-tail discoverability that platforms like Spotify or Netflix just don’t (yet) have So… even if a creator’s audience on YouTube isn’t massive right now, how many are willing to walk away from those opportunities completely? And how big will Netflix’s checks have to be to convince them? There’s no doubt Netflix entering this space has potential to change the landscape. But whether Creators follow in a real way - and whether or not they should - is the story I’m not quite bought in on yet. What does everyone else think about Netflix's plan?
