42,000 HubSpot customers are monkeying 🐒 around with email. According to the HubSpot App Marketplace, 42,000 HubSpot customers have installed the Mailchimp integration. If you’re using both, it’s worth rethinking your setup. I get it. Mailchimp is cheap. You can change tiers month to month, cancel anytime, and the price feels easy to justify. But here is the problem: Reporting is misleading. I have seen Mailchimp show 500 clicks to a page, but the actual page analytics show only 100. That is a huge gap when you are modeling engagement. Interface is clunky. Templates are mostly geared toward ecommerce. Makes sense since Mailchimp is a Shopify favorite. Integration with HubSpot is weak. You can make it passable, but it takes too much work. HubSpotters simply aren't happy with it. It has 2.9 stars out of 5 with 131 ratings in the HubSpot App Marketplace. HubSpot is simply a better email solution if you are already using it for everything else. But yes, it is more expensive. For example: Mailchimp Standard (10,000 contacts) = $135/month HubSpot Starter (10,000 contacts) = $350/month That is nearly three times the cost, or about $2,500 more per year. Here is the fix: Most email lists are inefficient. Often the top 30% of contacts generate 90% of engagement. That means you are paying for 70% dead weight. If you can identify that top 30%, move them into HubSpot, and cancel Mailchimp, you’ll end up with the better system, spend slightly less than before, and have everything running in one place. Most teams I work with don’t have an in-house modeler for this. I’ve helped many companies make the shift from Mailchimp to HubSpot, resulting in cleaner data, better reporting, and simpler workflows. Generic email blasts don’t work for lead generation in 2025 But the market still focuses on sending HTML heavy, one size fits all emails to generate leads The traditional and dated way of running lead gen is: ·     Use a big image boasting about your brand and the content you’re promoting ·     Use the same email copy for every person you’re emailing, regardless of who they are ·     Re-use the same target account list every quarter after quarter, hoping someone bites We know the buying group is bigger and messier now. The “IT DM” is no longer the person calling the shots But most suppliers haven’t moved with the times. We see it time and time again: ·     The Operations Director, who cares about systems and risk, gets the same message as the IT person ·     A startup/small biz gets the same message as a global giant ENT company ·     A Retail company gets the same message as a Finance org This approach treats everyone the same, and causes low responses and a huge amount of missed revenue/opportunity To run modern and successful lead generation, we need to be running personalized experiences ·     What triggers has this account shown? ·     Where are they in their journey? ·     What’s happened in their business? New office? Funding round? Hired new talent? ·     How does this person make decisions? What keeps them up at night? ·     What language do they use? ·     Are they data obsessed? Do they care about risk? Are they looking for new ideas? We think even down to the level of behavioural psychology that’s relevant to each persona ·     A finance director responds to clarity, hard data, and risk/reward framing ·     A marketing director responds to ideas that boost pipeline, brand impact, or campaign performance ·     An Ops leader wants efficiency One approach. Three very different emails. That’s how we cut through the noise So instead of blasting the same message to everyone… we focus on sending the right message to the right company, and the right person at the right time, using language that’s going to capture their attention

I completely agree with Joris van Kappen that an ICP is a repeatable pattern of customers your business is intentionally built for. It it doesn't repeat and if it's not predictive, it doesn't scale. If it doesn't guide content, messaging, interactions and GTM decisions, then it doesn't matter. I also agree that most teams define their ICP backwards and start with... who could buy this vs. who will buy this with almost no uncertainty. By replacing who could buy this with who will buy this, you will go beyond demographics, technographics, personas and broad targeting. You should focus on how the customers that are landing and expand with you: 1. Are aligned operationally, executionally and culturally 2. Made strategic shifts in their business to be successful with your solution - how showed account readiness. 3. The situations they faced where you are relevant and where your competitors are irrelevant. 4. The active strategic priorities that you played a strong, unique role in. 5. Were showing signs of willingness to pay.
