When an Engineer Makes Canned Stew: Professional Deformation in Action Most people cook. Engineers — evaluate risk, check safety valves, and mentally simulate explosions. I decided to make homemade canned stew in a 45-liter autoclave. Should’ve been a simple family activity… but my brain had other plans. So the “cooking process” turned into: – Clearing the area (kitchen → safe zone). – Checking the safety valve. – Controlling temperature and pressure. – Installing a temperature alarm at 120 °C. – Running a steam cycle at 1.5–2 atm. And while monitoring, a very normal thought (for engineers only) crossed my mind: “If the autoclave ruptures, what will be the pressure surge in the room, and how wide should I open the windows to avoid fatal consequences?” Quick calculation: 👉 Room volume: ~50.4 m³ 👉 Autoclave content: ~90 liters equivalent at atmospheric pressure 👉 Pressure spike in case of instant rupture: ~0.0002–0.0003 atm (a barometer wouldn’t even notice) 👉 Window opening percentage? Any. Even a crack. It’s only needed for venting steam, not preventing an “explosive” scenario. Professional conclusion: The real danger is not room overpressure — it’s the shrapnel from the vessel. So there I am, standing in my kitchen, calculating energy release and remembering industrial safety codes… while making stew. Engineers, you know exactly what I mean 😄
