Because Black and brown kids are never seen as kids. They are punished like adults. Criminalized like adults. Sentenced like adults. A white teen named Jesse Butler was convicted of 11 counts of rape and sexual assault. He strangled two girls and recorded it. He was sentenced to 78 years but will serve zero jail time. Zero. And still, no mugshot. No outrage. No Fox News segment. No “law and order” crowd demanding accountability. Because when they do it, it’s “a mistake.” When we do it, it’s a “threat to society.” Meanwhile— 🌍 A 15-year-old Black boy named Kalief Browder spent three years at Rikers Island without trial, accused of stealing a backpack. 🌍 A 14-year-old named George Stinney Jr. was executed in South Carolina’s electric chair in 1944 — for a crime he didn’t commit. 🌍 In 2016, Black youth made up 21% of Florida’s teen population but over 67% of teens transferred to adult court. These are our “kids.” And they’re treated as criminals before they ever get a chance to grow. Our kids don’t get to be seen as innocent. They don’t get the luxury of being called “youths.” They grow up knowing the world already has a verdict waiting for them. We tell them to move carefully. To keep their hands visible. To survive what others walk through freely. And still, we are told justice is blind. Meanwhile, we’re also being told: - Don’t apply to everything - Tailor every resume - Avoid AI - Write custom cover letters - Cold message strangers - Follow up (but not too much) - Stay upbeat - Don’t take ghosting personally It’s a lot. It’s exhausting. It's like a full time job with no pay. Honestly, it’s hard not to start wondering if you're doing something wrong even when you’re doing everything “right”. This process can mess with your head. So if you’re out here searching for your next role too.. protect your mental health. Take breaks. Grab your favorite treat. Go to a cat cafe. Remember that not hearing back doesn’t mean you’re not qualified, skilled, or worthy. It just means this whole thing kind of sucks.

Leah Suter liked thisLeah Suter liked thisMy mother grabbed me by my wedding dress and pulled me close while she was doing my makeup. She said, “You better not quit medical school. Don’t you let him take that away from you.” She was sweet as pie. But she said that with her full chest. She was never a fan of my future husband. She was right. But that’s a different post. This is about her. When I was a kid, people called me slow. My mom corrected them — “She’s not slow. She just learns different.” We didn’t have the language for it back then. Nobody was saying autism. Nobody was saying spectrum. When the school wanted to put me somewhere that would’ve boxed me in, she pushed back. When they found what we’d now call a processing disorder, she got me the right class instead of the wrong label. When I had a meltdown, she’d turn off every light in the house. She didn’t call it a sensory reset. She just knew what I needed. I still do that today — sit in my walk-in closet, no windows, and let my nervous system come back online. She married young. Got pregnant fast. Never finished her own degree. I think that was one of her biggest regrets, and I think I became the place she put the dream she didn’t get to finish. There were so many nights I wanted to quit medical school. It was hard y’all! She always had the exact right words, perfectly timed. That’s a skill. I don’t know how she did it. I’m learning with my own kids. She was in the crowd when I walked across that stage as a doctor graduating with honors. She hugged me and said, “You didn’t let him stop you.” At her funeral, the pastor stood up and said my parents raised children who all became successful — and then he said it: “Even the slow baby became a doctor.” I sat there as a grown woman, diagnosed, informed, decades past the name-calling — and it still hit me in the chest. Here’s what I want you to take from this: never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. They don’t know what’s inside you. Maybe you can’t do it the traditional way. Maybe you have to build your own way there. But don’t let them stop you. To every mother advocating for a kid the system doesn’t understand yet — you are doing more than you know. To every “slow” kid — check the room in twenty years.

They are planning to hire 1,000 fellows overall, with the first cohort of 100 beginning in October 2026. A few things to know: 1. It is paid Fellows receive an $85,000 salary plus benefits for the fellowship year. 2. It is full-time Fellows are placed with host organizations for 12 months and work in person. 3. It is for early-career professionals Applicants must be 18 or older, authorized to work in the U.S., and have less than two years of full-time work experience. 4. A degree is not required They are looking for people who can learn, communicate, build, teach, and work through real problems. This is not just for people with traditional tech backgrounds. 5. The work is mission-driven Fellows will support organizations working in areas like education, public health, workforce development, food security, housing, community development, civic tech, nonprofit services, and more. 6. The first deadline is coming up The first cohort begins October 19, 2026, and applications for that cohort are due July 17, 2026. I think this is a great opportunity because AI careers are not only going to be about coding or building models. A lot of the real work will be helping organizations understand how to use AI responsibly, improve workflows, build better systems, train their teams, and still keep people and judgment at the center. If you know a recent graduate, young professional, nonprofit-minded person, workforce participant, or someone early in their career who has been trying to figure out where they fit in this AI shift, please share this with them. I have learned that writers, especially technical writers, tend to thrive in remote environments, not because we are introverted or hiding behind our screens, but because writing needs space. Real space. The kind where you can think, reflect, and let ideas settle before turning them into something clear and useful. This may not be true for every writer. Some love the buzz of an office and the energy of in person collaboration. But for the vast majority of writers I have worked with, we do our best work when we have our own time and our own space to sit quietly with our thoughts. When you are writing, quiet is not a luxury. It is part of the workflow. Deep work does not happen in a room full of background chatter or constant interruptions. It happens in those moments where your brain finally unclenches and you can actually hear your own ideas forming. And honestly, comfort matters. Good writing does not appear because you are sitting in a conference room. It shows up when you are in a space that feels calm and natural to you. Your favorite chair. Your perfectly imperfect home office. Even your kitchen table with coffee in hand. Remote work does not make writers less connected or less collaborative. It gives us the environment to do what we do best: think deeply, write clearly, and create content that truly helps people.
