Laurel Morrison shared thisThis year I decided to go back to school to learn to code, I picked Nashville Software School for full stack web development (inspired by Callan Morrison). Over the past 3 months, we've learned front-end development (HTML, CSS, Javascript, React framework) and yesterday we presented our front-end capstones! My app was called TravelMatch, a website that matches users with potential travel destinations based on their trip criteria. Extremely proud of what we have learned so far, and I'm so excited to start with back-end this week. Shoutout to my amazing front-end instructors (Brenda Long, Bryan Nilsen, Ardis "Red" Tilson, Monica Kay Provence, Bryan Ford) and cohort 47 classmates!

Laurel Morrison liked thisLaurel Morrison liked thisI've been a bit quiet on the job hunt for the last couple of months; I took my layoff as an opportunity to follow a dream much earlier than I thought would be possible. Sailing the Caribbean on D.T.O the 1986 27th Pacific Seacraft Orion II sailboat I spent the last year and a half refitting was incredibly rewarding, but much like the refit was full of challenge and growth. Offshore solo sailing pushed me to new limits of endurance and well out of my comfort zone. Even against the wind and the Gulf Stream D.T.O delivered me safely home. Even though I was taking a break from coding, I leveraged many of the skills I have been honing over the past couple of years. Logistics, risk management, resource management, and even solo sailing people management... For now, D.T.O is back safely on land and I am diving back into the search for my next challenge. LLMs are changing the landscape, but people and customer-focused problem solving remain at the heart of the work we should all be passionate about.

Joining this talented team and having the opportunity to work together with the director Greg Weatherford is a true honor. I also have the privilege of working with Joe Damico again, a mentor of mine since beginning my career in public service in 2018. I look forward to telling the SCC’s stories and creating messaging for one of the commonwealth’s most important institutions. I want to take a minute to thank my colleagues and mentors at Virginia Economic Development Partnership who supported me and shaped my growth so that I could take this next step in my career. I will be cheering you all on from a few blocks away! I’m excited for what’s ahead and eager to contribute to work that has a real impact on Virginians across the state.

This is me being accountable. I didn't do anything today. We went for a long walk with the dog this morning. I caught up on some shows. I watched soccer. I napped. I was sitting here at the end of the day feeling a little worthless, when my partner reminded me how many good things have happened in the last 48 hours. 4 calls with old networking partners who wanted to help. 3 old friends reaching out with job openings they can submit me for. More than a dozen former coworkers, reminding me how much they enjoyed and valued our time working together. Even a former client who wanted to make sure I was doing ok, and ask if they could refer me to their network. So today, to all the friends and colleagues who have reached out, I just wanted to say thanks. It's good to be reminded of my impact. You're the best. Today's Album of the Day sets the tone for tomorrow. Let's Rock. https://lnkd.in/eE6aXz-K
