Kevin Li liked thisMy journey into foreign languages began at 12 in middle school, deeply influenced by my background as a Gambian-American. This path led me through years of study, culminating in a degree in Applied Language and Intercultural Studies with a concentration in Spanish and instilled in me the belief that languages do more than teach words; they unlock worlds, both professionally and culturally. However, I noticed a significant issue: many Black and Brown children aren’t introduced to foreign languages until high school, missing out on crucial early development. This realization ignited a mission to create a joyful, accessible entry point for the next generation. How can we proactively equip Black and Brown children with these world-opening keys at an earlier age? This mission inspired Mi Mundo en Español, a bilingual Spanish coloring book designed specifically for Black and Brown kids. It emphasizes representation, fosters a love for language, and prepares them to confidently engage with our global community. Mi Mundo en Español is officially available now. Together, we can empower young global minds and ensure that early language exposure opens doors for all. In this episode, we discuss ProRL: Prolonged Reinforcement Learning Expands Reasoning Boundaries in Large Language Models by Mingjie Liu, Shizhe Diao, Ximing Lu, Jian Hu, Xin Dong, Yejin Choi, Jan Kautz, Yi Dong. This paper introduces ProRL, a new reinforcement learning training method that uncovers novel reasoning strategies beyond those found in base language models. Empirical results show that models trained with ProRL consistently outperform base models on challenging reasoning tasks, including cases where base models fail even with extensive attempts. The study demonstrates that prolonged RL can meaningfully expand reasoning capabilities by exploring new solution spaces over time, advancing understanding of how RL enhances language model reasoning.

Just wrapped up a deep read of NaturalThoughts: Selecting and Distilling Reasoning Traces for General Reasoning Tasks from FAIR at Meta. It’s one of those papers that doesn’t just report numbers - it invites you to rethink how we approach reasoning in LLMs. What makes this work stand out is its clarity of focus: not all reasoning traces are created equal. The authors move beyond the traditional "scale everything" mindset and ask better questions. Which types of reasoning examples actually make models better at general reasoning? What kinds of traces help them think - not just produce answers with lots of tokens? NaturalThoughts is built on the insight that performance gains come not just from more data, but from smarter data curation. The team shows that selecting examples based on difficulty - like when multiple teacher models disagree - or based on diversity in reasoning strategies leads to stronger students. In some cases, these strategies outperformed popular distillation datasets like OpenThoughts and LIMO across STEM reasoning benchmarks. They also explore mixing System-1 and System-2 style reasoning traces, allowing student models to be both more efficient and more adaptable at test time. That part struck me, because it feels closer to how humans actually reason - we switch between quick intuition and deliberate analysis depending on context. If you're working on instruction tuning, alignment, or data-centric model improvement, this is worth your attention.
