Once a year I get an affirmation in the mail that my membership is totally worth it. $282.93 cash back and only $130 renewal. Who wouldn't renew with value proposition like that? Of course, that's not even close to the actual math on whether the membership is really worth it, but rather than let me come up with my own criteria when it's time to renew Costco is proactively saying "hey look, your membership was $130 and we just sent you a check for $282.93, you're totally coming out ahead!!!" The next question should of course be "Steven, how come this membership is in your name and not your company's name??? What a waste of a tax deduction!!!" Ordinary and necessary. I run a virtual firm with no physical presence. Sure, I could find something to buy at Costco to call a business expense to try and justify the extra $130 of my membership being taxable...but why? It's a flimsy argument at best for a $50 tax deduction that's probably just going to make an auditor mad if my return ever was reviewed? Doesn't seem worth it to me. I'm not anti company Costco memberships at all, for a lot of companies they make a ton of sense, my virtual firm isn't one of them. Do the things that make sense for your business, don't just copy what the cool kids online say they do. Happy Tax Planning!

We’ve been brainwashed to believe that if it didn't come out of the dirt, it doesn't count. Enter Lab Grown Diamonds. They’re chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. Even a jeweler often can't tell the difference without a special machine. The only difference? One requires mining the earth and the other requires science. Oh, and the price tag. When I proposed to Emily, she had a very clear vision of what she wanted. (She has good taste... which usually means expensive taste 😅). I ran the numbers on a “natural" diamond for what she wanted, and it would’ve cost upwards of $100,000, which is a down payment on a house or a luxury car. That’s a compounding asset. So we went lab-grown instead. Because we have a great relationship with our jeweler, we spent about 1/10th of that price. Now she has a rock that catches the light from across the room, she gets compliments on it constantly, and not a single person has grabbed her hand and asked, "Wait, is this natural or lab grown?” Nobody cares. We got the dream ring and we kept around $90k in our brokerage account. Easiest ROI I’ve ever made.

What portfolio average do you use when projecting retirement success for your clients? 6–7%? Maybe 8–10%? Do you factor in your advisory fee, platform fee, and fund expenses? I hope so. Because over the last 25 years, the S&P 500 has averaged close to 8%. Hmm… If you’re projecting 8% gross, and your all-in client cost is 1.5%–2.0%, your clients are really only compounding at 6% net before inflation. 🤔 That’s a strong argument for: “Just buy the S&P and don’t hire an advisor.” Unless, of course, your value goes beyond…. Into tax efficiency, income strategy, portfolio construction, risk management, and behavior coaching. That’s where real alphas at…
