Ulta and Target just killed their $465M partnership after 5 years. Here’s what went wrong and what it teaches us about wholesale partnerships: The problems: • Less than 1% of Ulta’s revenue - not worth the complexity • 90% customer overlap - just cannibalized their own stores • Zero brand control - Target’s mess became Ulta’s problem • No skin in the game - Ulta collected royalty checks with no incentive to fix things The lesson: Before you sign any partnership, ask: • Will this bring NEW customers or just redistribute existing ones? • Can you maintain standards when someone else controls operations? • Is the revenue enough to matter? • Are both parties equally invested? Distribution without differentiation is just expensive shuffling.
