Leaders are leaving one-off surveys in favor of building continuous feedback loops that show what workers actually need, from flexible payroll options to student loan support and accessible mental health resources. Listening to employee input is good, but real impact comes from following through with real, responsive changes. When employees see that, trust grows and engagement rises—key ingredients for strong retention.

Yesterday, my 14-year-old daughter, Annalise, underwent open-heart surgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. After 6½ hours in the operating room, we’re incredibly grateful to share that everything appears to have gone even better than we had hoped. She is recovering well, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the extraordinary surgeons, nurses, and caregivers who have cared for her every step of the way. This experience has been a powerful reminder that people matter. The outpouring of prayers, messages, calls, and support from family, friends, colleagues, customers, teammates, and even people we’ve never met has been overwhelming in the best possible way. As Annalise recovers, she’s been cheering on her softball teammates from her hospital room while they compete at Nationals. Seeing her teammates rally around one of their own—and seeing her #36 jersey hanging in the dugout—has been a powerful reminder that no one goes through life’s toughest moments alone. To everyone who has reached out or kept Annalise and our family in your thoughts and prayers, thank you. We are deeply grateful. ❤️🩹 #Gratitude #Teamwork #Community #Resilience

The direct answer is a reality check we all must face: your "Open to Work" badge can be replaced by an organization in less than a week, but your health, your physical presence at the family dinner table, and your mental peace of mind are completely non-transferable. For generations, professionals have been conditioned to believe that skipping workouts, eating lunch over a keyboard, and ignoring chronic pain are noble badges of honor. We mask this exhaustion as "commitment," but we are simply burning the wick from both ends. When you consistently prioritize a spreadsheet over a doctor’s appointment, you aren't just giving a company your time—you are trading away your future. Too many businesses still operate under an obsolete command and control mindset, treating human beings as disposable assets to maximize immediate profit. Although there are some companies that are exceptions to the rule where people are placed at the forefront, the Bottom Line is this: True, human-centric leadership requires a radical shift to care and connect, acknowledging that an employee's well-being is sacred. Work is a single chapter, not your entire book, and you must build an unshakeable sanctuary of trust with yourself by reclaiming your boundaries. Shut the laptop at 5:00 PM, take the walk, and silence the notifications. You are the only "you" your loved ones get. Don’t give the absolute best of your spirit to a cubicle that won't remember your name in ten years. Prioritize the living person, never the corporate position. The recruiters who used to chase you go silent. The roles you’d have walked into now come with a younger shortlist. And a voice in your head starts whispering the thing nobody says out loud: Maybe I’ve aged out. Maybe I should just hold on to what I have. Here’s what that voice gets wrong. You didn’t get less valuable. You got more expensive to the wrong buyers. The companies that call twenty years of scars ‘overqualified’ were never going to pay you what you’re worth anyway. They want someone cheaper to make the mistakes you already learned from. That’s not your ceiling. That’s their budget. The experience you’ve started apologizing for is the exact thing a company with a real problem pays a premium for. A board in crisis doesn’t want potential. It wants someone who’s already been there. A CEO with a fire doesn’t want cheap. They want done. But you’ll never meet those buyers if you spend five more years gripping a chair, grateful no one’s asked you to leave yet. The market didn’t pass you by. You just kept shopping in the one store that priced you to clear. There are two kinds of senior leaders past fifty: The ones who shrink their ambitions to match a company that stopped investing in them The ones who go find the buyer who’s been looking for exactly what twenty years built You were never too old for the room. You were just standing in the wrong one, waiting for permission to be worth it.
