Kathryn Okawa liked thisKathryn Okawa liked thisI wanted to share an experience that made me reflect on the customer experience. Today, I accompanied my elderly mother to the podiatrist in NE Portland. While waiting, I observed an older gentleman in a wheelchair who had checked in and then slowly maneuvered himself from his wheelchair into a waiting room chair. Shortly after, the receptionist called out to him, apologizing for forgetting to provide a necessary form. He was obliged to repeat the challenging process of returning to the front desk from chair and then wheelchair to collect the clipboard and papers. This situation made me wonder: Why couldn't the receptionist have walked a few steps to hand him the form? While I don't want to dwell on the decline in client care that I often witness, personally as well as vicariously, this experience reinforces why our mission is centered around Ease. This principle extends beyond our services and can foster positivity in small ways—such as holding the door open for someone or allowing others into traffic. These small acts can help alleviate some of the negativity we encounter daily, and for me, that is a mission worth pursuing.

🐾 The Case for Mentorship and Buddy Programs in Veterinary Practices 🐾 The veterinary profession is rewarding but high-pressure, with long hours, emotional strain, poor pay and high burnout rates. Vets and nurses often feel isolated, underprepared, or unsupported. Without guidance, mistakes, stress and disengagement can grow — impacting staff retention, workplace culture, and patient care. Structured and supervised mentorship and buddy programs may be part of a solution. The goal: match staff to other staff based on needs or wants, NOT experience and offer supervision, feedback and support. What can it offer our people? It - Provides emotional support and practical guidance - Accelerates skill development and confidence - Reduces errors and stress-related burnout - Fosters a positive, cohesive workplace culture - Encourages professional growth and career longevity - Someone to hold your hand as you explore, navigate and get curious about challenges and learning - A horizontal relationship that leads with curiosity and support not management or orders Most importantly, in my opinion, it fosters a sense of belonging and connection. “They get this, they hear me, I feel safe with them.” Investing in mentorship is not just training — it’s building a resilient, skilled, and loyal veterinary team. The return would be measurable and can dilute the pressure placed on leaders to act as everything to everyone. What do you think?
