In a recent Q&A, Belle reflects on how Penn Engineering faculty and formative communities like the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE University of Pennsylvania Chapter) and the Science and Technology Wing shaped his path. "I had a mentor and support system to get me into and through Penn that I did not know I needed and would not have known how to construct if I did," says Belle. "If I can be a part of that same sort of support system for a student who otherwise might be lost or have less successful outcomes, then I want to do that." When we were working on the new FOX.com we discovered that most people are fans of "their" shows, and don't really care too much about the overall FOX brand umbrella. So, how can we make each show page unique, but still have it be easily updatable and easy to manage? We did this project back in 2010, and it was one of our first attempts at creating a modular framework that would support every instance, of every show, on this massive website.

In a world where AI handles more decisions, the real UX frontier is the seamless transfer of control—ensuring humans can step in without losing context, state, or accountability. We're moving beyond rigid autonomy to dynamic systems where handoffs are graceful and empowering. Key insights include: - The Handoff Problem: Mixed-initiative systems allow bidirectional control shifts; the challenge is preserving state during transitions to avoid confusion. - Decision Ledger: An append-only log of actions, confidence scores, and reasoning to brief humans on AI's prior steps. - Non-Destructive Overrides: Use proposal queues for AI suggestions that can be reviewed or modified without halting workflows. - Calibrating Confidence: Dynamic thresholds based on consequence, reversibility, and confidence—err toward escalation to build trust. - Reversibility and Intervention Windows: Leverage event sourcing for undos and strategic delays to enable human oversight in high-stakes scenarios. I find a lot of satisfaction in using vibe coding tools to turn what used to just be fun ideas into real outputs people can use. A couple weekends ago before our whole family was taken down with the flu for 8 straight days, Annie Clark and I took a conversation from our Thursday date night about how to reduce the murkiness around discussing design roles and responsibilities in the modern day and created Is Like, a framework for understanding what kind of designer you should look for based on your specific needs. Have a short conversation with our evaluator and Is Like will output a full readout of skills to look for, how they should be distributed, and what kind of title you should be looking for. We went from concept to publishing in about 72 hours before influenza-a prevented us from sharing, but we’re healed and would love to hear feedback.
