“A few years back Justin approached us at Handsome wanting to take on his first ever role as a Product Designer coming off a sales role at Invision. Admittedly, we are extremely critical when it comes to judging a product designer’s portfolio and bringing on someone with this little amount of experience made us skeptical to say the least. But there was something about Justin. Maybe it was the fact that he had created a portfolio of work on his own without any formal training that rivaled most of the designers we had seen coming from art schools. Maybe it was his eagerness to take on a design challenge we gave him and how quickly he turned it around, took our feedback, asked intelligent questions, and then quickly iterated on the design to a much better place. Yep. We hired him. During his time at Handsome Justin was one of the most versatile, hard working designers I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. He’s not afraid of anything. He’s the type of the person who one moment is leading a client meeting, collecting insights, building confidence, and then immediately gets to work on creating some of the most thoughtful designs I’ve seen. He’s a self-starter, a bad-ass, a problem solver, someone who lights up the room when he walks in and leaves you inspired when he walks out. If you ever get the chance to work with him just do it. You won’t regret it. ”

At this rate, Figma is incentivising product teams and designers to consider the far superior and cheaper alternatives. Handover is the cost you pay for a disjointed process. When code and design are no longer disjointed (and people realise it should never have been in the first place), a tool that exists in large to facilitate that legacy process and charge heavily for a fraction of what other tools could do better, will turn irrelevant and obsolete.

I have an uncomfortable truth for both founders and designers: For founders: you can’t expect a high-converting [asset] if you’re unwilling to invest in ongoing work and instead expect a one-off project with no trial and error. For designers: you can’t promise a high-converting [asset] if all you’re selling is a one-off project with no involvement after hand-off. The first is delusional, the second is dishonest.

Hot take for designers experimenting with AI + legacy systems: You don’t have to pick one AI tool and hope it integrates perfectly with your design archive. If you can get to the code, you can make it work. I’ve been testing different AI platforms for strategy and prototyping. What I realized: You can use any AI tool you’re comfortable with to think, prototype, and generate UI — as long as it outputs code. Then: 1. Copy the generated code 2. Paste it into Figma Make 3. Let Figma rebuild it using your UI/style library 4. Edit, refine, and share inside your real system That means: • Strategy can live anywhere • Prototyping can move fast • Your design system still governs the final output AI becomes a thinking partner. Figma stays the system of record. For teams sitting on years of legacy designs and wondering how to bridge that with AI experimentation — this is a practical path. #DesignSystems #AIforDesign #Figma #ProductDesign #DesignOps
