At the recent MPI Southern California Chapter Game On Roadshow, I had the opportunity to lead a session that’s close to my heart: exploring AI as an “assistant coach” for our industry. Too often, AI is framed as a threat to creativity. My goal is to flip that narrative. I shared how I use AI as a practical, everyday tool that helps planners and suppliers: • Streamline RFP responses • Discover new positioning strategies for destinations • Spark fresh ideas when the creative energy needs a boost In Las Vegas, we even took it further with an interactive exercise: reimagining the city’s narrative by using AI to challenge assumptions and surface unexpected storylines. The energy in the room was incredible and it showed me once again that AI doesn’t replace creativity, it sharpens it. For me, the takeaway is clear: the future of events isn’t AI versus people. It’s people empowered by AI. When used thoughtfully, it helps us design experiences that are more efficient, more inspired, and undeniably human. Editors are word people. We know the difference between "utilize" and "use" and "facilitate" and "help." So why do so many of us wing it when we market our editing services? In September at the EFA Bay Area chapter event, I showed attendees something to help them change how they think about marketing: a table of “magic words” that actually move people to action. Words like: ✏️"You" (makes it personal) ✏️"Free" (removes risk) ✏️"Now" (creates urgency) ✏️"Discover" (invites exploration) ✏️"Results" (promises outcomes) ✏️"Save" (addresses pain points) Magic words aren't gimmicks. They’re words that create a desired response in the reader. And when we choose them strategically, we nudge our audience in the direction we want them to go. What Changes When You Use Them Instead of writing "I offer copyediting services for manuscripts," you write "Discover how professional copyediting saves you time and delivers results readers trust." See the difference? One lists what you do. The other speaks directly to what your client gains. The magic words work because they're focused on the audience, not the service.
