Ryan Schumacher reposted this“To retain great people, you have to let them make a lot of decisions and be run by ideas, not hierarchy.” I’ll be honest, when Steve Jobs passed away, I actually cried for like an hour. Steve was an imperfect human being, we all are, but he was one of the most incredible visionaries and leaders I have ever studied. He had this unique view of the world which looked something like “be ruthless about the vision and flexible on the details” but there was a fluidity even about his vision. Steve changed the world, he left it better than he found it, and he contributed to the lives and careers of those who entrusted him with their futures. Steve knew apple wouldn’t get to where he knew it could go without some incredible talent, that he alone wouldn’t get it there (his first stint at apple I think contributed to this learning). I’m talking about names we all know now but who maybe we didn’t then…Jony Ive, Tim Cook, Scott Forstall, Bob Mansfield, and Tony Fadell…to name but a few. Every one of those individuals have gone on to become INCREDIBLE leaders themselves, and Steve invested in that. Doesn’t mean they didnt have some really hard debates and disagreements I imagine…but I’ll bet if Steve were still here today he would say that those debates helped Apple to become what it has, and without them, it wouldn’t have made it here. Christopher also stating 80% commits are not associated with any requirement is not only a sampling bias, but just lacks specifics. Are we talking about actual commits in a PR or a unit of work?
Assuming the latter this is just poor engineering discipline. AI doesn’t solve systemic organizational issues it exasperates them with an air of false confidence.

Well said. One of my biggest concerns is the risk of backtracking away from reliable, secure foundations. We benefited enormously from crowdsourcing stable codebases through open source. If agentic coding pushes us toward thousands of slightly different implementations, we drift back toward security through obscurity.
When a vulnerability appears in a shared library, the entire ecosystem can see it, fix it, and move forward together. When the same pattern exists in countless bespoke implementations, each one remains vulnerable until it is independently discovered and fixed.

I'd just spoken at a tech conference in New York. I'd projected loud enough for the people in the back to hear me when the mic gave out. I'd built a talk people could take home. And I was still the person who shrinks before someone else even gets the chance to say something. I've been sitting with that since I got home. I think I know why it's there. I grew up a people pleaser. I spent years in a domestically abusive relationships. I'm not going deep on that today, but I want to say it plainly because it's part of the story. That kind of experience teaches you to make yourself smaller. Quieter. Easier. It becomes a reflex. Even years later, even after so much work, I still catch myself shrinking before I register that I'm doing it. And then being a southern woman on top of that. Not too loud, not too sharp, not too blunt. The list is exhausting. I want to be loud. I want to be direct. I take up space when I walk into a room. I am speaking with my chest from here on out, because I went to that conference and I did exactly that. I'm in the works, but I think there are a lot of people doing the same thing. From logos to websites to user interfaces, we are constantly having to go to multiple places to see visual greatness. Maybe you bookmark sites that you like or you might be like a lot of us and forget where that bookmark might be (because your bookmarks have gotten out of control) or maybe you just simply can't remember what site that…Visual Heap is a visual aggregator for designers.
As designers, we continuously scour the web searching for inspiration and ideas for our next big project. We have gathered some of our favorite sites and compiled each of them into one site, given you and quick visual reference of some amazing work.
