You know that once they close on a home somewhere else, they spend on average around $9,600 in the first three months. You know that spend nudges their ratios in a predictable direction. SoFi built an entire channel on this idea. They convert a healthy slice of their in-house leads, then route the rest into a marketplace instead of letting them vanish. The applicant who didn't fit the box still generates value on the way out. Too often lenders spend heavily to acquire a borrower, decline them, and forget they ever existed. The relationship ends. Last Friday, we had the opportunity to ring the closing bell at CBOE. It was one of those moments where you look around, smile for the picture... and then immediately start thinking about all the people who got you there. A venture firm doesn't ring a bell because of the partners. It happens because founders choose to trust you. Because LPs believe in what you're building. Because teammates do the hard work every day. Because advisors, operators, and friends keep showing up with ideas, introductions, and encouragement. The bell itself lasts a few seconds. The work that matters happens long before it, and starts again the next morning. Thank you to CBOE for having us. The biggest lenders in America are rebuilding their technology right now. Not buying a module. Not bolting on a POS. Rebuilding. It costs a fortune, takes eighteen months, and drags your best ops people off their day jobs the whole time. And they are doing it in a market with no volume, which is exactly when the playbook says cut everything and wait. They are not doing it because they like software. They are doing it because of your biggest expense line, and it is not technology. It is LO comp. You cannot cut it, not in a purchase market, not without losing the people you can least afford to lose. The only lever left is making the seat worth more. Get an LO closing meaningfully more and you earn the right to pay less per loan while they take home more per year. Nobody loses. That is not a negotiation trick, it is arithmetic. Almost all lenders current LOS platform is a system of record. A database with forms on top. Very good at holding a loan, very good at telling you where it is. It does not do anything. The automation you bought on top of it is a pile of if-then rules somebody configured years ago. If the file looks like this, do that. It works, and it handles the 60% of loans that behave. Your people handle the other 40%. And the other 40% is the job. The self-employed borrower. The gift letter dated wrong. The condition that is technically satisfied but the underwriter wants restated. No rule covered it, so a human does it, and that human is often the one you pay 125 basis points. An agentic platform starts where the rules end. Not a rule that fires. A system that reads the file, understands what's missing, goes and gets it, checks whether it's right, and comes back to a human only when there's an actual judgment call. It works the file between your logins. It doesn't wait to be clicked. Legacy: your people wait on the system. Agentic: the system waits on your people, and only for the things that need a person. One of those is a filing cabinet. The other is a coworker. And this is why bolting AI onto a twenty-year-old core doesn't get you there.

I totally stumbled into my first real lessons around the value of networks. At Princeton, wealth and access existed on an entirely different plane. I didn’t arrive with the $200 “7” jeans, double Polo shirts, or family connections… nor did I arrive with a playbook on how to navigate my future. No one told me to go to career fairs, build relationships with recruiters, tailor my extracurriculars to the job I wanted, or do this thing called “networking.” So I didn’t do any of those things. I did my best to get good grades, make friends, and have fun. Like many places, Princeton’s entire fabric centered around being part of some group: a sports team, dance troupe, sorority, etc. These groups fed into the 10 eating clubs that made up the entire social life on campus. I had a lot of friends, but I was not part of a “feeder” group into the club I wanted to join. Fortunately, my boyfriend’s older teammates advocated for me, and I got in. Lesson #1: to get into selective places, someone has to know you, like you, and vouch for you. Got it. The next lesson came shortly thereafter. As an Econ major, I knew finance in New York was the default path, but I had no idea how to access it early. The big investment banks didn’t offer internships unless you were a rising senior, and I had waited until the last minute to figure out my sophomore summer plans. Then I saw a job posting on a physical bulletin board at my eating club (at least that’s how I remember it) for a summer internship at a boutique investment bank in NYC. Eli Scher, an alum of said eating club, worked there. So I reached out, made a good impression (by phone?), took the train up to NYC, interviewed in their office in Midtown East, and walked out with a job offer to start the following week. I’ll never forget the shock in my parents’ voices when I called to tell them I was moving to New York in a matter of days. Lesson #2: once you’re into said selective circles, the network is very helpful for getting your foot in the door. Noted. That internship taught me how to do a comparable companies analysis, how to unload the office dishwasher, and everything in between. But more importantly, that one initial experience on my resume became the first domino in my career path into a world I had never been in. *** Looking back, those two lessons -- relationships create social currency, and groups create access -- were worth more than anything I learned in Econ 101. I stumbled into those lessons early enough for them to change my trajectory. Most of my students don't get to stumble into them. By the time they realize the game is happening, they're already behind -- in jobs that don't come close to matching their potential.
