Truckload spot rates pulled back about 10% from the July 4 peak, which is expected after holiday volume clears and the network resets. That said, the bigger picture hasn’t changed much. Rates are still more than 55% above this time last year, and capacity hasn’t meaningfully loosened. Imports are climbing as shippers rush freight ahead of the July 24 tariff deadline, and empty containers are moving back to Asia at elevated levels - a clear sign port activity is picking up. Add diesel north of $5.13 per gallon, and the cost floor is staying firm. The next week will likely shape how tight drayage gets heading into early August. Freight that misses the tariff window doesn’t disappear, it just rolls into an inland network that is already tightening. With manufacturing and industrial output trending up, demand is building at the same time capacity constraints remain in place. Bids are still tough to land, especially for teams launching new business or implementing 1H26 awards, and the level of mini-bid activity we're seeing across networks tells the story. Don’t mistake this dip for a new baseline. Rates may have eased for now, but the pressure underneath hasn’t gone away. We likely haven’t hit the ceiling yet, and elevated rates will stick around. #supplychain #transportation #logistics #freight #truckload #imports

ATRI's newest annual benchmarking report, released July 15, puts the average cost to run a truck at $2.336 per mile for 2025 — the highest figure the group has recorded since it began tracking in 2016. Tolls jumped 13.2%. Repair and maintenance rose 8.6%. Rates didn't keep pace, so carriers parked equipment instead: fleets cut truck counts 2.4% and left another 10% unseated, the steepest capacity pullback since the 2022 downturn began. Insurance alone rose 3.9% to 10.6 cents a mile, 1.2 percentage points above consumer inflation that year. News Source: Transport Topics
