Journaling can be an excellent way to whittle down what feels overwhelming and confusing to smaller, digestible feelings and thoughts. While journaling can’t necessarily provide another person’s perspective, it can help us explore our own. Journaling can help us access subconscious processes and experiences we may be unaware of like how certain people or activities affect our mood, where underlying causes of anxiety or fear comes from, and how our habits may or may not align with our future goals. Journaling is an excellent way to supplement weekly therapy, and yes, your therapist will likely be thrilled to hear about new insights you came across while journaling. In a world that tells us the solution to our problems is in everything we do not have, you may be surprised to find the rich sources of insight and meaning within yourself. EMDR therapy is often misunderstood. EMDR doesn’t erase memories or bypass emotion. It supports the brain’s natural ability to process experiences that were previously overwhelming.
