HR: "What's your salary expectation " Candidate: $8,000 to 10,000 a month. HR: You are the best-fit for the role but I'm afraid we can't afford you. Candidate: Okay. $7,000 would be fine. HR: How soon can you start? Meanwhile the budget for that particular role is $15,000. HR feels like they did a great job in salary negotiation and management will be happy they cut cost for the organization. The new employee starts and notices the pay disparity. Guess what happens? Dissatisfaction. Disengagement. Disloyalty. Two months later, the employee leaves the organization for a better job. The recruitment process starts all over again. Leading to further costs and performance gaps within the team and organization. In order to attract and retain top talent, please pay people what they are worth.

A month ago, I stepped away from the engineering career I built in oil and gas. And I want to say this clearly: I’m grateful. Grateful for the leaders who challenged me. Grateful for the teammates who made hard work feel meaningful. Grateful for the projects that taught me how to think under pressure. Grateful for the growth and skill sets I gained in corporate America. That was my version of the American dream. But over time, I realized I wanted something more than a “secure” job. I wanted to own my time. I wanted a schedule that lets me be present with my kids. And I wanted the flexibility to spend more time with my parents in Vietnam as they’re aging. So I started educating myself and building options quietly on nights and weekends: Living below our means Disciplined saving Automatic investing in the market Investing in real estate to diversify my portfolio Learning tax saving strategies The FIRE journey (Financial Independence, Retire Early) wasn’t flashy or quick. But after 10 years of consistency, the numbers flipped: our investment income now covers our expenses. That’s when everything changed. Not because I “retired.” Because I gained a choice. And now I’m choosing my next challenge on purpose: entrepreneurship. Not to run away from corporate. But to build my dream, design my days, and create work I’m proud to own. Over the next 2 weeks, I’ll share the real story: what I did, what I learned, and what I’m building now.
