I planned to keep being the most useful person in the room — the one who could walk into any environment, take it apart, and tell you what was actually wrong. Twenty-five years of that. I sit in the middle of this every week at Frame. Monday morning: a vendor pitch where AI is about to solve everything overnight. Monday afternoon: a client's data environment with legacy systems, siloed teams, and zero alignment between IT and OT. The truth lives on the 50 tick marks between "machine god" and "all hype" that nobody wants to talk about. Because nuance doesn't go viral. But nuance is where the work gets done. The companies actually getting AI into production aren't the loudest believers or the biggest skeptics. They're the ones asking boring questions about data quality, governance, and integration. That middle ground is where every real result I've seen has come from. Where does your organization actually sit on this meter right now? One checked every box of a quality customer experience. The other was a nightmare. Better connected me with Michael Dean from NEO Home Loans. He: ✅ Communicated by text (my preference) ✅ Educated me on the nuances of borrowing in Florida ✅ Analyzed my contract to provide an accurate estimate (even caught an error!) ✅ Helped me choose the best mortgage structure for me Meanwhile, SoFi: ❌ Bombarded me with irrelevant automated emails ❌ Pestered me relentlessly while my offer was pending ❌ Ignored the contract and provided an erroneous estimate ❌ "Called BS" when I politely informed them I'd be using a lender in Florida I'd hoped SoFi would be a one-stop shop for modern financial services, but it's clear that those with focus—Better, Wealthfront, Robinhood—have the better model. Good takeaways for all modern businesses.

The expensive mistake contractors make is treating a CMMC assessment like a normal audit. CMMC is not a casual conversation with an auditor who “gets what you mean.” Assessments are expensive. One of the most outdated assumptions I still see in cybersecurity is the belief that "it won't happen to us." There's no such thing as zero risk. No matter how mature your controls are or how well-intentioned your team is, every organization has exposure. One of my go-to principles is simple: Bad things happen to good companies. That's not pessimism... It's reality. The difference is how you prepare, how you respond, and how quickly you recover. Spending time in Phoenix, AZ, at a recent Cyber and Compliance conference served as a strong reminder of the value of connecting with like minded professionals in this field. There is something powerful about being in a room with peers who are navigating similar challenges balancing risk, compliance, business priorities, and limited resources often within very different organizations, yet facing comparable realities. One theme consistently emerged during the discussions: the primary challenge remains securing sustained C-suite understanding and buy in for a mature, disciplined cybersecurity program. Cybersecurity has evolved beyond a technical issue; it is now a business risk issue. While frameworks, controls, and tools continue to advance, leadership alignment remains the critical factor in determining whether programs succeed or face difficulties. Events like this highlight that these challenges are not isolated. They are shared across industries, and progress is accelerated when professionals collaborate, exchange insights, and learn from one another.
