Jon Page liked thisJon Page liked thisToday marks my last day at Kroger. A job turned career that changed the course of my life for the better. I am so grateful for all the experiences, the mentors, and the many friends I’ve made throughout my tenure. When I look back though, what stands out most isn’t the projects, launches, or milestones- it’s the people and the intersection of food and community. The store team that showed up for each other regardless of the challenge that day. The unique communities of customers at each location- a central hub of weekly or even daily routines. It’s the fact that food is a fundamental requirement to sustain life; and also holds the power to tear down barriers and build bridges across divides. A former leader of mine, Mark Nolting, often reminded me that “grocery is a most noble profession”, an essential service without which our most basic needs are left unmet. It’s one of the reasons why Kroger’s Purpose is to Feed the Human Spirit- and it has been an honor to share that purpose with such an incredible team over the years. Jon Page reacted on thisJon Page reacted on this💭 Seven Months. Hundreds of Applications. A Lot of Lessons. It’s been seven months since I started the job hunt. Some days feel full of progress, others… not so much. I’ve applied for hundreds of roles, had plenty of interest and interviews, but only made it deep a few times. Feedback has varied — sometimes “overqualified,” sometimes “we’ve re-scoped the role.” With the job market slowing and competition rising, I’ve had to pause and ask myself if it’s time to reset expectations — not around my abilities, but around how this landscape has shifted. What’s come out of that reflection is clarity. I know more than ever the kind of work that energizes me — leading teams building meaningful, AI-driven products that make life easier for real people. I’m realizing the right role isn’t just about the title; it’s about alignment, impact, and culture fit. Interestingly, the best traction has come from recruiters who reached out before I even applied — a reminder that relationships and timing often matter more than algorithms. I’ve rewritten my resume multiple times to get through the ATS gauntlet, and while that’s been humbling, it’s also helped me refine how I tell my story. Seven months in, I’m still optimistic. Still learning. Still showing up. If you’re in the middle of your own search, keep going. You’re not alone. Slow progress is progress! #1 After feeling overwhelmed and having a bad premonition I started learning Danish on duolingo. Why Danish? Because of the positive list, although I have no plan to move at least I can open up my options. 🇩🇰 #danish Since then I have learned a lot about Danish culture and the language. I've taken 3 classes from the great Northwest Danish society. https://lnkd.in/df5xrGwV We may even visit Denmark this year. #2 I'm working on an Audiobook of a scifi novel I wrote (called 'Astrobiologist') and created an app to be able to share it with folks. Wolfie's been attending my Portland Community College class on Fly Fishing and he's just riveted. We haven't gone fly fishing yet, but we are getting there slowly and surely (we go regular fishing monthly). #4 I also just got my First Aid/CPR certification again. I want to be ready if the time comes to help. Hopefully that never happens, but at least I've built the skills to know what to do if it does. I've learned so much about myself doing slow projects. I work a lot and have an active life being a father so time to myself is scant and disjunct. Doing artful things makes me feel good and I need to keep doing them.

But there's a sneaky danger: In our rush to offload tasks, we might accidentally outsource our critical thinking. The result? Work that's efficient but derivative. Ideas that lack depth and originality. So how do we harness AI's power without dulling our mental edge? Here's my #1 tip: Plan first, AI second Before you fire up that AI assistant, take 5 minutes to write down: 1. What's my goal? 2. What are my requirements? (Time, resources, stakeholders) 3. What do I want the AI to help with? Example for a data analytics project: 1. Goal: Identify customer churn risk factors and develop retention strategies 2. Requirements: - 3-person team - 4-week timeline - Access to 2 years of customer data - Stakeholders: Sales, Customer Service, and Product teams 3. AI assistance: - Data cleaning and preprocessing - Initial pattern recognition in customer behavior - Generating visualizations for key metrics - Suggesting potential retention strategies based on industry best practices This quick planning step keeps you in the driver's seat, ensuring AI amplifies your vision instead of replacing it. The 1960 Tsunami in Hawaii: Long-Term Consequences of a Coastal Disaster

On May 23, 1960, a devastating tsunami struck the city of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. This tsunami provides a unique natural experiment as the tsunami was unexpected, and the other Hawaiian Islands, which were not hit by the tsunami, provide an ideal control group that enables us to precisely identify what happened to the economy of Hilo. We use a synthetic control methodology (Abadie, Diamond, & Hainmueller, 2010), and find that fifteen years after the event, unemployment was still 32%…

I’ve been working on the #AAuth .NET SDK (still in draft), and wrote a blog post to explain the IAM problem space around agentic delegation in a simpler way for folks new to the domain. Agents are easy to talk about in abstract terms: “let the AI do things for me.” But the moment an agent touches real accounts, APIs, money, messages, or data, the hard questions show up: who is the agent, who is it acting for, what exactly was it allowed to do, and how do we know when that authority should stop? The post uses a parent sending a kid to the corner shop (90s themed) on the family account as the analogy. It maps surprisingly well to agent identity, delegated authority, consent, missions, revocation, sub-agents, call chains, and audit. AAuth is used as the reference model, but this is more of an informal introduction to the problem domain. Sharing in case others find the framing useful. So interesting... the sample size is small, so we'll see how other studies present, but this article suggests that AI coding assistants don't make us much faster. There's some data in here that suggests they do if you are practiced with them, but 30% more, not even 100% more (2x). In my experience AI can get new ideas bootstrapped quickly but it starts to get confused with the code base gets larger. It requires developer skill to get more out of it. For existing or large codebases, you need to focus it with good requirements documents and let it go in "agent" mode. I think our workflows need to change as these tools evolve to make best use of them. https://lnkd.in/gwUTBehz

A great look into how we're thinking about agentic coding benchmarks. Stunning quote from Stephanie Jarmak's post: >"Linux, the largest open-source codebase, is around 30 million lines of code... We have customers with codebases approaching 100 billion lines of code, four orders of magnitude larger than Linux." MOST of the code in the world is hidden behind private, enterprise walls. And these are the codebases that make the world go round! A benchmark based on linux or k8s can't possibly capture their challenges.

“Developers are a resource. They don’t talk to product people.” I overheard that on Seattle’s light rail, and it stuck with me. I make it a point to talk directly with the people who use the software — delivery drivers, paralegals, and others doing the real work. Every conversation saves me hours of coding the wrong thing. When developers are treated as “resources,” they’re cut off from the feedback that makes their work valuable. Talking to users isn’t a luxury — it’s how you build the right thing faster. You don’t need a big product team or AI tools for that. Just curiosity and a conversation.
