Coding agents are like toddlers with chainsaws. Not my words. These are from a recent interview by Steve Yegge. The dopamine highs from vibe coding are matched by the insane lows that come with an over-eager amp or claude code agent nuking critical server files or refusing to do things that it was crushing the day before. Coding agents are massive productivity boosters. But if you get greedy and turn off your guardrails—like periodically checking files into git at every major milestone/task —they will bite you in the behind. On a recent project, I lost four hours because claude code, which had perfected an Excel parser to handle a super long, super complex excel file, decided to keep the parser and the server files in the test directory. When it came time to deploy the app to production, the agent decided to cleanup the test directory and nuke the main files along with it. My desperate efforts to retrieve the source from a memory dump were a failure. The next day, amp, which is expensive ($$$), fantastic and less interrupty (not a real word 😊) decided to forget everything in spite of ALL KNOWLEDGE and learnings persisted in markdown files with apprpriate structure. amp kept taking me on the same roller coaster of errors again and again. The point here is that orchestrating and controlling AI agents requires regular checkpointing, strong task instruction, and effective prompting with a bit of a Vegas gambler mindset. Even after doing all that, you will #fail, and that is okay because the dopamine high will come again when the next terminal session starts!! #keepvibing

Coding agents and app gen platforms are making stack decisions. Most defaults are harmless. You can swap the tool, rerun the search, change the library. But some defaults are one-way doors: data, auth, tenancy, compliance posture. Once those get waved through, “swap it later” quietly becomes “rebuild it later.” Coding agents are great at accelerating development. They’re so good, in fact, that they can blur the line between decision-making and implementation. That makes it easy for assumptions or missing context to slip past architectural rigor entirely, or get reduced to a few multiple-choice questions at the start of a session. The problem isn’t that the default is always wrong. It’s that popularity, training data, and optimization pressure can make the default feel more neutral than it is. My take: let agents move fast on the two-way doors. But on the one-way doors, own the why. Make the decision deliberately, record the tradeoffs, and give your agents durable context to follow tomorrow. #AIAgents #SoftwareArchitecture #DeveloperExperience New blog post just shipped digging into this.
