John Coffey reposted thisJohn Coffey reposted thisI’ve been building my own desktop systems since 1996, so moving my daily driver to a purchased laptop is not something I do casually. But my workflow has changed. My home-built Ryzen 7 5800X3D desktop is still a great system. Instead of retiring it, I’m moving the RX 7800 to my new System76 Pangolin Pro as an OCuLink eGPU and recycling the 5800X3D system with an RX 7600 for my 11-year-old. That gives me: ✅ Portable Linux workstation ✅ Docked gaming performance ✅ Local AI capability ✅ A second life for excellent hardware ✅ One less Windows machine in the house The best part is that my kid’s upgraded system will also be his first full-time Linux desktop, running CachyOS. We’ve already tested his games, from Roblox to Minecraft, so this should feel like an upgrade instead of a compromise. Maybe he just games on it at first. That’s fine. But maybe it also helps him see a computer as something more than a gaming box. John Coffey reposted thisJohn Coffey reposted thisI’ve been using Linux for roughly 30 years. For more than 20 of those years, Debian has been my daily desktop driver. Since Sarge. So when I finally decided to try an Arch-based distro, I expected to confirm a few old biases. Then I installed CachyOS. A few days later, it became my primary desktop OS, stayed on my new System76 Pangolin Pro, and even made its way onto my wife’s Intel/NVIDIA laptop. That was not the outcome I expected. The performance, hardware support, gaming experience with Proton, AMD polish, NVIDIA handling, and overall desktop responsiveness changed my mind fast. I still love Debian. That has not changed. But CachyOS reminded me that desktop Linux keeps evolving, and sometimes the thing you avoided for years is exactly what you needed to try next.
