Two perspectives, one question. Which approach do you trust more, and why? PCB designers, why do you choose SMD vs NSMD pads? SMT process engineers, which one actually makes your life easier on the line? My experience has been that non solder mask defined (NSMD) pads give more consistent results in assembly, but that’s purely anecdotal. I don’t have hard reliability data of my own yet. That got me thinking. Future DOE? Designers, what factors drive your choice between SMD and NSMD? Reliability? Manufacturability? Density? SMT process engineers, which one actually makes your life easier on the line? I can tell you what I don't like is when the PCB has both NSMD and SMD on the same component. I've been trying to send full Gerber packages to better help my stencil manufacturer create the optimal paste Gerber. Does this make any difference for the stencil manufacturers? Two perspectives, one question. Which approach do you trust more, and why?
