Maybe things have changed in these 20 years, but based on my experience art and design schools need to have more of a focus on Design as a business, or as a function of business, i.e. entrepreneurship, how Design fits into corporate growth and profitability, etc, and you guys should turn this podcast into the textbook. It represents years of conversations, experiences, and lessons from inside the footwear industry finally having a platform. It’s been a true honor and joy building this alongside my longtime friend and co-host Omar Bailey. Omar’s journey, leadership, and the groundbreaking work he continues to do at FCTRY Lab make him the perfect partner for these conversations. There’s a real chemistry that comes from years of friendship and a deep love for product, design, and storytelling. We couldn’t be happier with the name. After 20+ years in footwear, Made to Last carries special meaning for us. On one level, it speaks to longevity, resilience, and the kind of work that stands the test of time. But for those inside footwear, it also nods to the last, the foundational form a shoe is built around. That dual meaning perfectly reflects what this show is about: craft, process, and the people shaping things built to endure, whether it’s a product, career or legacy. What excites me most is the purpose behind the show. Made to Last is about giving a voice to the people inside our industry: designers, innovators, marketers, developers, founders, athletes, and executives whose work shapes the products we all know, wear, and covet. People see sneakers but rarely meet the minds behind it. This show is our way of putting faces to products, and stories to silhouettes. From material selections and seismic deals, we aim to give space for all the stories to be told - the secret meetings and sleepless nights. I truly believe the long-term impact of this platform can be meaningful for footwear and beyond. We love creating space for the kind of storytelling that inspires the next generation of creators while documenting the journeys of those who hold up the culture. Joel Ness shared thisWhat happens when a history major is married to an industrial designer? Naturally, your family road trip from California to Indiana and back includes a stop at a sod dugout house from an original South Dakota homestead, one of the only such homes still standing. While absorbing the tangible and tactile history of the place and its artifacts, you notice something that relates very specifically to your experience in developing eyewear and AR/VR tech consumer products: Early VR, a stereoscope from around the turn of the 20th century. It's a stark reminder of how things have changed in only a few generations. To put it in perspective, my own grandparents were born only a handful years after this particular property was homesteaded. Technology is advancing at an unprecedented--and accelerating--rate. From the invention of the stereoscope around 1830, a major improvement through simplification was made by Oliver Wendell Holmes after about 30 years (and deliberately not patented), and products based on his version were sold for over 100 years! But are the products improving to the extent that they should be? How many of today's VR products will exist outside of landfills in the 22nd century? Processors will degrade, plastics will become brittle and crack, and apps will be unsupported, leaving the products bricked. The same can be said for most industries. Seeing a product survive as an heirloom or artifact is both heartwarming and depressing--on the one hand showing the longevity that is possible with thoughtful design and wisely selected materials, and on the other hand serving as a testimony against of our culture of consumption.
