They raise concerns. They challenge decisions. They ask uncomfortable questions. The real danger begins when good people conclude that leadership either cannot or will not listen. That is when the meetings become quieter. The survey comments become safer. Managers begin editing bad news before it reaches the executive team. And your strongest employees quietly start answering messages from recruiters. After more than two decades leading large organizations, I learned to pay close attention when the complaints stopped. Silence does not always mean alignment. Sometimes it means your people have given up on being heard. Executives often ask how they can improve retention. Start with a harder question: What has our organization taught people will happen when they tell us the truth? The answer will tell you more about your culture than another engagement score ever will.

Last week on the San Juan River, I got to spend time with a great client, strengthen an important relationship, and enjoy one of my favorite activities: fly fishing. Even better, I had the opportunity to host the winner of the United Way fishing trip I donated to our associates earlier this year. The older I get, the more I realize that some of life’s best moments happen when the lines between work, friendship, service and adventure blur together. When you genuinely enjoy what you do and who you do it with, work and life stop competing with each other and start complementing each other. That feels a lot more fulfilling than "balance".
