James Maguire liked thisJames Maguire liked this👋 Hey PMMs, save this! Great share by my friend Aatir Abdul Rauf "Some orgs are better off NOT hiring a Product Marketing Manager. Why? Because their DNA isn't designed to let them do strategic work. Some examples: 1) Roadmap meetings are thought to be pertinent to only the product and engineering teams. Product marketers are perceived as the "watercolor" hippies who make things pop. 2) Sales reps have the conviction that their sales pitch and competitive knowledge have no gaps. All they need are materials (decks, 1-pagers, etc.) that they can use as an arsenal to fire at prospects to close deals. 3) Messaging is thought to be a largely "solved" problem because someone downloaded a Claude Code skill. 4) The leadership has strongly held views on who the ICP is and why they win/lose deals. When such orgs advertise to hire PMMs, they are really hiring "artifact producers". There's nothing wrong with that. They should just alter the JD and title to reflect that. Now, the common rebuttal: it's the PMM's job to earn that influence. Show evidence. Educate the team. Prove the value. That's fair. Many PMMs resort to that. But there's a difference between an org on a learning curve and one with incompatible DNA. A learning curve is fixable. A PMM can earn the room over time. But incompatibility means the system makes it hard to assimilate PMMs because the org was never wired to absorb their strategic work. Expecting results in that environment is a bit unfair. A Product Marketing Manager only makes sense if the org is opening up to aspects like: 1) PMs and PMMs work in lockstep. 2) PMMs help sales win deals via win/loss insights. 3) Evidence-backed positioning research is valued. 4) Launch is seen as a team initiative, not a checkbox. 5) Customer/market insights affect product decisions. 6) ICP definitions are seen as hypotheses, not "facts". 7) They know PMMs and copywriters are different roles. Hiring a PMM before you're ready simply gives you an executor with an inflated title. Fix the JD or fix the environment." -- P.S. Make sure you give Aatir a follow btw!

James Maguire reacted on thisJames Maguire reacted on thisAnd so it begins ... today is the first day of retirement for me. After 41 years of employment at Wolters Kluwer/CCH, it’s hard to put into words how grateful I am for my work journey. It seems like yesterday that I arrived fresh out of college, working at a company I’d never heard of, to manage a small CPE product line called CCH Audilex. And, some days, I can still smell the ink and paper and hear the steady rhythm of the printing presses in the old Peterson Avenue building at the legal, tax and accounting publisher, CCH. It was truly a wonderful journey for me. I was fortunate to work for leaders who encouraged me, believed in me, and trusted me with new challenges, roles, and responsibilities. The company gave me far more than a career—it gave me a life. Through this work, I was able to buy and pay off a home, support a family, allow my wife to stay home to raise our three children, and see all three through college and even post‑graduate degrees. I was also able to travel and participate in some award trips with other recognized contributors. For these and so many more things, I will always be deeply thankful. What I valued most, and what I will miss the most, are the people. The relationships with my colleagues, our outside authors and speakers, and our many external partners have been the most meaningful and rewarding part of my career. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with some of the smartest, most talented, and most generous people anyone could hope to know. I learned from them, admired them, laughed with them, and they made me both a better professional and a better person. I hope I was able to help them along the way in some way, too. I’m sincerely grateful to everyone I crossed paths with since September 1985. People have been asking what I plan to do in retirement. I have a running list (currently 42 items and growing!), with the simple goal of always having something to do and something to look forward to each day. Just a few highlights: spending more time with family and friends (including my son Ben’s wedding in 2027), traveling near and far, biking and hiking, gardening, making and playing music, volunteering locally, learning new things, and finally tackling a very long list of home projects. Our first “big” item is a Danube River cruise later this Summer, starting with a few days in Munich and Salzburg and then sailing from Passau, Germany down to Budapest. Lots to look forward to! So, here we go ... on to this new stage in the wonderful life God has blessed me with!

🚗 September 2025 Auto Market Update: What Dealers Need to Know Two fresh decks dropped this month — Cars.com’s August Industry Insights and Cox Automotive’s Q3 Forecast. When you combine them, the story is clear: 📊 New Vehicle Market Inventory down ~6% YoY → fewer cars on lots. Average price: $49K → high trims dominate. Sub-$30K models are disappearing fastest. Tariffs adding ~$5K per import → OEMs are trimming incentives and leaning on premium models. 🏷 Used Vehicle Market Inventory down ~3% YoY → tighter supply. Average price: $29.6K → steady, not sliding. EV supply down ~30% → Tesla’s pricing pulls down averages, while non-Tesla EVs are rising. ⚡ EV & Hybrid Trends New EV demand +33% YoY → record share at ~10% of new sales. Leasing >50% thanks to incentives, but lease returns will flood used EV supply in 2026. Hybrids/HEVs are surging → buyers see them as a safer middle ground.
