"I don't get it, you've got to work on the newest tech." This was a response from a senior leader when I gave my notice. The idea that developers are satisfied if there is plenty of work and it's using cool new stuff drives me nuts. What I said was that everyone wants to know that what they did mattered. Developers deeply crave knowing that their code was useful. In the years since that conversation, I've also met so many leaders who struggle to find their satisfaction. For some reason, going to all those cool meetings and sending those emails doesn't cut it. I suspect they want to know that their effort mattered too.
