Josh Walker posted thisWhen I lost my corporate job in January 2019 I had already been planning my future business The Electric Sheep. I had spent a career in Marketing Procurement/Production for a number of National Retailers and decided that I could create a business around that supporting small businesses with affordable options for their marketing, visual elements and promotional items. I did reenter the corporate world for EXPRESS and even contracted a few places after I left there, however I realized that I was spending a lot of time working to build my business and decided to do it full time. It hasn't been easy and the hours are often long, but the work has been very rewarding and has lead to some amazing opportunities, and then... In December 2021 my friend (and now business partner) Tisha Hall and I were talking about not feeling like we were doing enough to make a difference in our community. Out of that conversation Mixed Ethically Candle Co. was born. With Mixed Ethically we are able to do a number of things to give back to our community, including working with a number of local grassroots charitable organizations by creating custom labeled candles for fundraisers, like Pelotonia and NC4K and also partnering with organizations to donate a percentage of our proceeds from the sales of our candles and other products. Last night we were honored and humbled to host an event in our shop with an amazing organization called Heer to Serve to raise funds for them to continue their mission of supporting the unhoused community at Heer Park in Columbus, Ohio. This wonderful group serves meals, provides first aid, hygiene products, harm reduction supplies, clothing and more. (Heer to Serve isn't on LinkedIn, but you can find them on Instagram and Facebook if you would like to contribute or learn more about them). During the event we heard the emotional stories from some of the residents at Heer Park as well as the event organizers and it reinforces our resolve to continue the work that we are doing Mixed Ethically Candle Co. and finding and partnering with these amazing organizations to bring awareness and much needed resources to them. We've heard that Philanthropy is about generosity in all its many forms, commonly referred to as gifts of “time, talent, and treasure.” We like to think that we all have one of gifts that we can share! This wasn’t an easy decision and I spent a lot of time thinking it through (Jake Teeny can confirm 😅). For now, it’s the right decision for me and my family, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have this time with them. To all my Hyatt people: I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had with you - from traveling to our regional offices in Hong Kong and Japan with Emily Wright Zamorski, to running through the streets of Barcelona with Mariska Fernandes to find a last-minute wedding cake for a photo shoot, to the collective stamina it took to refine nearly every brand across my portfolio (far too many collaborators to tag 😊). All of it made possible by the talented and thoughtful colleagues I’ve had the privilege of working with across the globe. I learned so much from you all, and I’m really thankful for the impact you’ve had on me. It means a lot to have had this chapter as part of my journey, and I’ll carry everything it’s given me into what comes next.

The fashion industry can be a wild ride, and today I’m taking a moment to reflect and celebrate just how far this journey has come. Here are five things I’ve learned in five years of entrepreneurship: 1. The time will pass anyway. You can start today and have five years of growth behind you, or wait five years for the “perfect time” that may never come. 2. Comparison only creates chaos. Your only real competition is who you were yesterday. Everything else is just noise. 3. Working harder isn’t always the answer. Sustainable success comes from building a life and business that supports your well-being because there is so much more to life than work. 4. Community matters. Entrepreneurship can feel lonely, but having people in your corner who challenge you, support you, and remind you of who you are makes all the difference. 5. Take time to reflect and celebrate. Growth happens quickly, and it’s easy to move on to the next goal without recognizing how far you’ve come. One thing I didn’t anticipate when leaving corporate was how much I would miss the built-in sense of community. What I’ve come to realize, though, is that you don’t lose it—you rebuild it. And along the way, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by people who didn’t just cheer me on, but who pushed me and gave me the kind of honest, sometimes tough love that helped me grow into the business owner I am today. To my husband, my clients, my partners, and my mentors—THANK YOU! For the encouragement, the accountability, the hard conversations, and the belief in me (even in the moments I questioned myself), I am endlessly grateful. This community I’ve built is truly one of my proudest accomplishments. And while I’m proud of what I’ve created over the last five years, I know this is only the beginning. Here’s to many more years of pursuing big dreams, helping others build theirs, and continuing to grow every step of the way.

Josh Walker liked thisJosh Walker liked thisAs I wrap up my final semester of college, I’ve been reflecting on a spring that challenged me, pushed me, and ultimately shaped how I want to step into the next chapter. First off, I’m excited to share that I’ve been named the 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Insurance and Risk Management at the University of Cincinnati Carl H. Lindner College of Business! This recognition means a lot to me as it reflects my academic work, extracurricular involvement, and co-op experiences during the past four years. Speaking of extracurricular involvement, Gamma Iota Sigma, Gamma Chapter recently hosted our second annual Black and Gold Banquet. As President, this event was especially memorable, highlighting all of our accomplishments this past year. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this night a success including our company sponsors, faculty, alumni, and student members who are the backbone of this growth. One of the accomplishments that we celebrated at the Banquet was the creation of our first Gamma Retreat. This past weekend, we took 19 members to Red River Gorge, KY to make it easier for members to connect and feel a sense of belonging in the chapter. As one of my main initiatives this year, I am excited to say that we have already gotten positive feedback, and are hoping to make it a tradition. None of the above could have been possible without the support I’ve gotten from Weston Atchison, MSOL, along with the encouragement I’ve received from my family and the Lindner community. I also want to sincerely thank Maya Morjaria — named the Outstanding Co-Op Student in Business Economics — as she’s been one of my biggest supporters during my time at the University of Cincinnati. As I prepare to graduate, I’m excited (and a little nervous) about what’s ahead. Grateful for the journey, and ready for what’s next. 🎓
