Brian is a former high school science teacher who pivoted his career to software by attending Dev Bootcamp. In his spare time, he plays piano and competes in tournaments for a fan mod of Super Smash Bros called Project+. He is currently ranked #2 in Illinois and achieved #32 in the nation for the 2022 season. In Brian's words, “The idea of a "forever company" is really rare for our generation, but my team is amazing and I love that my work is having an impact on instructors and students across North America. Having taught high school science, I find myself constantly thinking that I would've loved to have Packback as a tool to use in my own classroom - giving students feedback on their writing was always really time-consuming, so seeing Packback provide that feedback as they write is incredible. I got a really good impression from the team during the interview rounds, and the more I learn about Direct Primary Care (DPC), the more excited I am to get to work and contribute to this movement. I'll be expanding my technical abilities in this role. I haven't worked with Ruby on Rails or Elm in production before, both of which are important parts of the tech stack. If you've used either of these and you've got learning tips, send them my way!

Jesse Barron liked thisJesse Barron liked thisI don't want to open a can of worms and start a discussion around the pros and cons of studying LeetCode problems for interview prep. I also don't want to sound obnoxious when I say that after 13 days, and 26 problems solved (only easy ones so far) that I am starting to find solving these types of problems as sort of fun. But that's the truth, and I intend on continuing through the medium and difficult problems regardless of whether or not being able to solve them will be helpful in an interview one day. I'm still pretty new to all of this, but I think if people started viewing LeetCode problems as games or puzzles, instead of chores, or a barrier to entry, life would be a little more pleasant and the learning would be a little easier. Also, tomorrow is my first day of bootcamp! Wish me luck, if ya don't much mind. :)

During my dad’s visit to South Africa, Nelson Mandela took him and President Jimmy Carter to a clinic that cared for infants born with HIV. As reporters and photographers looked on, he picked up one of the babies and held it in his arms. During a time when people were afraid of HIV transmission, Mr. Mandela exemplified how we can fight stigma and spread reliable information. His legacy lives on as a reminder that it’s possible to solve big challenges. #MandelaDay

groupMix is a web application that generates a smart playlist based on the musical tastes within a group of people for a given event .
- Integrated Spotify's API to gather user's musical preferences, individual track's metadata, as well as tapping into the controls of the Spotify desktop application.
- Wrote our own prioritization algorithm that would take into account musical constraints for an event and weigh a tracks metadata against those constraints to determine a songs…groupMix is a web application that generates a smart playlist based on the musical tastes within a group of people for a given event .

- Used React-Native to build the application
- Built a server using Node with Feathers.js in order to retrieve data for the feed and update the radio stream information in real time

For out final project at Full Stack me and my team designed and built an application called 'groupMix' that generates smart songs playlists based on the collective music preferences within a group. Our project was competing with 30 other projects built by our peers at Full Stack, and was voted to be "Developers Choice" by those same peers.

I’ve worked with some tough systems in my career, but nothing has tested my patience like developing an Ember addon (or made me love the React ecosystem even more). (If you’re not familiar, Ember was one of the first SPA frameworks. think Rails-flavored JS. Fun fact: LinkedIn is built on Ember! 🐹 ) Developing a React library is like cooking dinner in your own kitchen: you control the equipment, the ingredients, and the timing. Ember addons are like prepping a meal someone else will finish in their kitchen, with their utensils, on their stove, and you still have to put everything back in the exact cupboards Ember wants everything to go in. When developing an Ember addon, there's a lot that can go sideways: => Code lives in addon/, but needs to be re-exported in app/ or it won’t render. Yup, just about everything 😩 => Template modifiers (sort of like a custom React hook + useEffect but scoped to a DOM node) need re-exporting too, or you’ll be lost trying to figure out why nothing’s firing. => Dependencies have to satisfy the resolver and the dependencies required by the consuming app’s Ember version, or the consuming app will break. => Get ready for bugs that only happen in the real app but never in your dummy app! => And if you get lost, there isn't much documentation out there, so you'll need to spend valuable time spelunking through source code, community threads, and discord. Ember addons aren’t just your code. They’re Ember’s conventions, your code, and the consuming app’s quirks, all woven together! All that being said, I really respect Ember and what it's strict conventions have taught me over the years. Whenever I'm back in React though, I love it just a little bit more each time!
