If you run telecom operations at national scale, you do not fear big failures. You fear small ones. Early in my career, we had what looked like a minor issue after a pricing update. A small percentage of customers were receiving an explanation that was technically correct, but unclear. On the dashboard, it barely moved the needle. Within days, repeat calls climbed, queues stretched and social teams were firefighting. Nothing was “broken”. But the system was under strain. That was the lesson. Average performance tells you how the system behaves when it is calm. Resilience is measured by how it behaves when it is under pressure. Telecom does not break on average days. It breaks when volatility meets fragile processes. - Outages. - Migrations. - Fraud spikes. - Tariff changes landing all at once. This is where conversational AI either stabilises the operation or quietly amplifies the problem. At this scale, it is not about sounding intelligent. It is infrastructure. - Handling concurrency without panic hiring. - Following policy consistently when volumes spike. - Escalating in a way that feels like progress, not a barrier.
