That’s exactly why we hosted a conversation between AGP CEO, Trent Ricker, and Tim Arnold, leadership development expert and best-selling author. In this discussion, they explore what it looks like to lead when there isn’t a clear “right” answer — when leaders are balancing competing priorities, perspectives, and expectations at the same time. Bouvier shared thisI'm a longtime fan of Christopher Penn + Katie Robbert's Trust Insights newsletters, podcasts, and videos -- prolific, cross-disciplinary, tangible, considered advice on a range of transformational digital activity, applicable to a wide scope of business needs. Katie just featured this NotebookLM generated focus map of what areas org management and operators should be thinking about in a "human-first" approach to driving AI success. In November, I was lucky enough to attend an AI round-table in Chicago (and catch an on-time flight!) with peers and organizational leaders focused on the challenges ChatGPT and other solutions present to the nonprofit industry. And I was reminded that if a trend, like social media, or video, or SMS is an inevitable one, best to get yourself and your team engaged in however small or basic a starting point. Start where you are with AI, and keep the bigger picture in mind as you climb. 2026 is gonna be a ride, happy New Year! 🙏 🥳

Bouvier reacted on thisYesterday I attended a talk by Dr. Nicol Turner Lee from the The Brookings Institution on Equity in AI at the MLK DC Public Library, and it gave me a lot to think about. We discussed how different groups can be harmed by AI across social sectors like healthcare, criminal justice, and employment, often in ways that aren't immediately visible unless you're looking for them. We also talked about the tradeoffs that come with any new technology. What would it actually look like if AI were applied to genuinely benefit society in these sectors? We brainstormed the kind of policies we would need to support that kind of good use. It was a great way to think about how we can shape AI to benefit society, rather than just reacting to the harm it causes. It's a conversation more people should be participating in, especially those of us who work at the intersection of technology and public good. If we don't, we leave the AI industry free to shape AI around maximizing profit, often at the expense of the communities most vulnerable to harm. #ai #aiforgood #dcpubliclibraries

Then a second ask, then a survey, then a "we miss you" 6 weeks later. Not once did I hear about what my gift actually did. I didn't make a scene. I just stopped giving to them. I bring this up because nonprofits are one of the most trusted institutions in America, with 57% of people trusting us more than business, government, or the media (Independent Sector). That trust is extraordinary, but it's also fragile. Every donor interaction either builds that trust or spends it. And automating the ask on repeat spends it, one impersonal touch at a time. So before your next send goes out, it's worth asking one question: When you read your donor emails from the last month, would they build a first-time donor's trust, or quietly chip away at it?

J.C. Bouvier liked thisJ.C. Bouvier liked thisI've been at a lot of donor conferences, webinars, and client meetings lately, and I've noticed something. I'm starting to sound like the fundraising industry. I don't like it. 😂 A few phrases I'm hearing everywhere right now (and yes, occasionally catching myself using): "Cutting-edge strategy" = something direct marketers have been doing successfully since 2014. "Transformative donor engagement" = we personalized an email. "Integrated omnichannel experience" = direct mail and email hit around the same time. "Game-changing platform" = a dashboard. "Best practices" = whatever the person giving the presentation happens to sell. The longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that most fundraising success comes down to doing the basics consistently. Know who has the capacity and inclination to give more. Reach out like they're actual human beings. Give them a reason to stay connected. Repeat. Mid-level fundraising isn't a secret formula. It's disciplined execution over time. Most programs don't fail because they're missing some revolutionary strategy. They fail because the organization stops paying attention when the next shiny initiative comes along. The work isn't complicated. Consistency beats complexity. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
