Special day today as I close this chapter of being Task Force DOS at the Hilton Garden Inn SF Airport North. We found the perfect candidate for the position so my team threw a “going away party”. I’m going to take so many wonderful memories with me because they presented a beautiful picture of our property with everyone writing something special. I’m blessed beyond words to get to be a part of this team and know they will continue this successful journey as I move on to my next Task!! So proud of everyone…

Over 40 million people have read the book, and there's a good reason for that... ...Stephen R. Covey's book is based on powerful timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness. This personal / leadership development book has spectacularly outsold all other such books and laid the foundation for much of the work in this area the past decades. The principles are indeed timeless and as I have the privilege to facilitate 7 Habit programs on behalf of FranklinCovey, I wanted to highlight three of the habits in this short post: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND The beauty of this habit is that it applies to everything. Whether it's what you want to accomplish in your life, or in a meeting. Too often we embark on an activity without having clarity in what we are trying to accomplish. Without clear goals we are much, much less effective. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD We may underestimate - or simply forget the power of this skill at times. We shouldn't! For my regular readers and clients, you know one of my favorite quotes is: "the only one who sees the world like you do, is you". In the seven habits, Covey makes a powerful case for ensuring that we first think about the other person's perspective, before presenting our own. As nobody sees things like us, we first and foremost must understand their vantage point to establish a foundation for an effective dialogue. The second part of this habit is just as important as the first one…. We should never just "assume" the other person has understood us - we should make it absolutely certain. This habit is a powerful equation where we need to master both ends to become exceptional leaders and communicators. SHARPEN THE SAW I rarely have clients that don't struggle with total overload or have people in their teams that are burning out. We shouldn't wish this on our worst enemies! “Sharpen the saw” is about ensuring that we continuously fuel our mental, physical, spiritual and emotional dimensions. I'm a strong advocate of keeping a balance - because if you're putting too much effort and time in one area of your life, you eventually start losing touch with reality. Of course, there are periods when we need to go "all-in". But if "all-in" is "all-the-time", you're asking for trouble. Naturally, the 4 other habits are paramount as well…but for more on those I invite you to read the book. Dallas is the perfect spot at this point in my business journey because it is central. It's easy to get to the East Coast and West Coast. It has one of the largest airports in the world, so I can get a first-class ticket essentially anywhere, with direct flights almost everywhere. It's also great for quick trips to places like Cabo and Cancun, which are only 2 1/2 hours away. So I love Dallas for now. Am I going to live somewhere else in the future? Leadership principles I know at 34, I wish I had known at 21: 1. No Agenda, No Meeting Time is your most valuable resource. Hours are wasted in meetings that could be emails. When you have meetings, make every minute count by having a clear agenda: • What do we want to achieve? • How are we going to get there? • What's our timeline? 2. New Initiative, Make a Plan Before every project, scope out: • Your one core focus • The best strategies to achieve growth • Immediate next steps Never create a plan without actions you can tackle in the first hour. Precise planning avoids pitfalls and builds focus. 3. Be Vulnerable, Be Real Be human with your team. Admit when you’ve gone wrong. Your team will trust you if they know you own your mistakes. Jocko Willink calls this "Extreme Ownership." Never act like a victim. The rest of your team will follow your example. 4. No Meetings Before Noon Intentionally make time for deep work and focus. Two core abilities are required to thrive in the modern economy: • Mastering hard things • Producing output at an elite level of quality and speed Setting aside time for deep work enables both. 5. Sweat the Small Stuff How you do anything is how you do everything. Don't let little things slide. Attention to detail is what separates you from competitors • Details matter • Design matters • Copywriting matters The customer experience is built bit by bit. 6. Be the Hardest Worker in the Room But also the dumbest. Hire people smarter than you. But let no one outwork you. Lead by example. Show others the work ethic you expect. This drives your team to reach their collective potential. 7. Flatten the Hierarchy Create a culture of psychological safety. Every employee should have a voice in your company. Value ideas from your most junior employees as well as your most senior. You build a culture of discussion and innovation, instead of a hierarchy of fear. 8. Connect to a Greater Mission Most employees: • Punch the clock in at 9 • Mindlessly go about their work • Leave as soon as the clock hits 5 Instead: • Hire mission-driven employees • Give them projects they care about • Sync on their purpose — Enjoy this? ♻️ Repost it to your network and follow Matt Gray for more.
