I found Jobs-to-be-Done thinking right when our startup was struggling to articulate the voice of the customer. To young, hungry engineers, the words of Clay Christensen, Bob Moesta, and Tony Ulwick were eye-opening. Their core idea is to focus on the job your customer is trying to get done, and how they measure success. The job stays stable while the technologies serving it change. That’s exactly what we see in MedTech. Twenty years ago I worked on an ultrasound-guided needle device with a single potentiometer joint. Today, Mendaera is solving the same job (precise needle placement under ultrasound) with handheld robotics and integrated imaging. Same job, new technology. That's what we're teaching our graduate students today, with a guest lecture from Scott Burleson, who wrote my favorite JTBD book, The Statue in the Stone. Jobs hold steady; what changes is the technology that's available and sustainable for the people doing them. Sometimes a healthcare job moves locations or changes hands, but the job itself stays the same. As with anything great, there’s a trap. My senior design professor and mentor, Andrew J. DiMeo, Sr., Ph.D. , once wrote about how Jobs-to-be-Done can bias researchers to stay too technical - the same way economists model a perfectly rational human who doesn't exist. People are irrational, biased, and often act on how they feel or want to feel. Miss that, and you build a product that nails the functional job while failing the emotional one. So when we map jobs in our program with Trophy FINDER, we layer the emotional side right on top - how each job executor wants to think, feel, say, and do at every step. We teach students how to write job steps and desired outcomes so they learn the core principles, and we use AI initially as a reviewer for syntax and pressure-testing. However, AI can take the first pass while users edit until it matches what they're hearing in interviews and shadowing. One advantage over a spreadsheet is that steps shared across multiple people connect automatically. I’ve built plenty of these job maps in spreadsheets, and some directly in AI chats. I don't miss either.
