Iris N. liked thisIris N. liked thisAs I was packing up the last few things before heading out on our first family vacation since my son was born, I joined our Product & Engineering All Hands to listen in. What I learned was I'd been selected as a Fraud Organization Change Maker. Then, when I got home from vacation this weekend, this trophy was waiting for me in the mailbox! Almost exactly 10 months ago, I joined Q2, and it has been one of the best decisions I've made, both professionally and personally. I get to work on meaningful problems, form relationships with customers, and learn from incredibly smart teammates who genuinely care about what they're building. I'm especially grateful to Jeff Scott for taking a chance on me, and to leaders like Hima Mukkamala and Kirk Coleman for creating a culture that challenges the status quo and encourages their teams to do the same. After spending such a wonderful week with our family celebrating 5 years of marriage, I can't end this without mentioning my biggest supporter, Daniel Overton. Thankful to build our lives together while we both continue to build our careers. Returning to work tomorrow feeling incredibly grateful and refreshed for what’s next!

Last Saturday at SQL Saturday Austin, I presented “Your Next Step Beyond SQL: Certifications, Community, and Career Growth.” After the session, I brought several technical books to give away. The first one picked up was Microsoft Azure Fundamentals Certification and Beyond, Third Edition by Steve Miles [Azure/AI MVP MCT]. For someone starting the Microsoft Azure certification journey, especially AZ-900, a well-structured book can make the first step clearer, faster, and less overwhelming. It gives learners a guided path to build cloud fundamentals instead of jumping between random resources. I reviewed the early ebook version a few months ago, and the finalized hardcopy stayed close to what I liked: practical structure, certification focus, and a beginner-friendly path into Azure. Thank you, Steve Miles [Azure/AI MVP MCT], for writing the book, and thank you, Deepak Kumar and Packt, for sending the review copy. To address this gap, I developed Runway, a Claude skill that focuses on the essential question: how long can I sustain my current situation, and what adjustments do I need to make to reach my financial goals? Runway allows users to describe their fluctuating income and expenses, projecting three scenarios: conservative, base, and optimistic. This way, potential payments are not counted until they are confirmed, providing a more accurate financial picture. The most challenging aspect of this project was not the calculations, but rather establishing clear boundaries. Runway presents various options without moving money or directing actions, empowering users to make their own decisions at every critical juncture. On some level I wanted them to fail. But I also didn't let that stop me from looking clearly at what the technology actually does, and I've been looking quietly and carefully for a while now. The truth is it's genuinely revolutionary. It also carries real, underappreciated risks that I don't see the hype merchants talking about honestly: technical debt, cognitive debt, and financial debt. Left unmanaged, they quite literally threaten business continuity. I wrote it up. It's long, it's opinionated, and it doesn't end with an exhortation to move fast. https://lnkd.in/ehC9TcVs
