We had a few minutes to get together over a stack of our panels and took a quick snapshot in time of what we're up to here at Plantd.Huade Tan shared thisTo decarbonize construction materials, at Plantd we believe you have to change the biomass feedstock and the production technology. We are excited for TechWire to cover how we are building the factory of the future. Here is how Huade Tan, co-founder & CTO, explains it: “I like to tell people we're making, essentially, the desktop printer equivalent of an engineering material mill,” said Tan. “If you look at how these factories are built currently, they are massive infrastructure projects, the size of a small town, and they burn as much energy as a small town. Our production process will be a machine you can put into a building, like an Amazon warehouse, or any warehouse. So essentially, it’s like installing a printer and plugging it in, and you have an OSB factory, effectively.” The plan is for the factories to be 100% electric so that they’re both low carbon and low operating cost. “If you look at one of these typical mills that are the size of the small town, they have massive smokestacks and emissions control processes to try and reduce the amount of pollution that goes into it,” said Tan. “But at the end of the day, you still don’t want to live next to one of these mills. Huade Tan shared thisJust another day at the panel factory. In a few short months we've gone from napkin sketches to a full sized machine, easily the largest panini press in recent history. With our proven recipe, we also made our first full sized board on our first attempt and we're off to the races!Huade Tan shared thisWe design and build our own machines to produce carbon-negative building materials. It's an approach that enables us to iterate, move fast, and fundamentally rethink ways to remove costs and carbon emissions from long-established manufacturing processes. Case in point: When we opened our production shop a year ago, our team began by building bench-top scale machines capable of making small, 6-inch square building panel samples. A year later, we scaled up the size of our production machinery and press to make full-size, industry standard 4 x 8 feet panels. It's the first time in decades that a production press for engineered building materials has been built in America. We see a future where the walls and structures of homes and buildings lock away vast amounts of carbon dioxide pulled from the atmosphere. Our aim is to build it. Come do it with us. Nearly 20 years later, it feels right to be back where it all started. I’ve spent my career building electric cars, rockets, satellites, and pizza. After four hardware startups, I’ve realized that the toughest engineering challenge isn't the nuance of a chemical reaction or the thrust of a rocket. It’s the humans behind them. The purpose of Magenta is help people manufacture stuff. I learned first-hand at ABL Space Systems, SpaceX, Parker Hannifin, and B. Braun Medical Inc. (US) how tough and messy making things can be, and I always believed software was a huge part of the solution. Today's software is changing, and I am more excited than I have ever been about what's possible. Magenta enables hardware engineers to tackle tedious and complex tasks with the support of specialized AI Agents. Design, documentation, and compliance tasks that used to take me days now takes minutes. It was important to us to build a tool that compliments your existing software (from spreadsheets to Netsuite), and requires little effort to get started. Serving before, during, and after the presidential transition was enlightening, at times frustrating, and profoundly humbling. Above all, I’m grateful to have worked alongside public servants whose quiet tenacity and commitment to protecting the country have raised the bar for what I hope to contribute next.

(HOG) Phase 1 Test Program designed to test self-propelled, zero-emission, battery-electric rail vehicles and their associated computer and telemetry technology systems, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the system and new operational approaches to rail vehicle technology in the short-haul movement of containers. The G&W companies are supporting the development of this freight solution to compete with the short haul road freight trucking market (less than 400 miles) and to further reduce carbon emissions. Most manufacturing websites sound like they were written by engineers, for engineers. The problem is that most of your buyers aren't engineers. I see this everywhere: "We provide precision-engineered solutions utilizing advanced metallurgical processes and state-of-the-art CNC machining capabilities." 😵💫 What does that actually tell a procurement manager who needs to solve a problem? In engineering school, they taught me technical accuracy matters. In marketing, I learned that if your prospect can't understand what you make in 5 seconds, they're moving on to someone else. Your buyers are trying to solve business problems. They need to know what you make and how it helps them, not how impressive your processes sound. ❌ Don't say "precision machining services." ✅ Say "we make the replacement parts that keep your equipment running." ❌ Don't say "advanced material solutions." ✅ Say "we make the bearings that prevent your $2M machine from going down." Your technical expertise is your competitive advantage. Flexible vs. Sloppy (A hard truth for anyone using AM today) One of the greatest advantages of Additive Manufacturing is flexibility—rapid iteration, fast design changes, and geometries that traditional methods can’t touch. But then there's the uncomfortable part: -----> That same flexibility often enables sloppiness. I see too often: + Design teams move faster. + Quality checks get lighter. + DFM gets skipped. + Production controls become an afterthought. = Sloppy results AM already has more inherent variability than most traditional processes. That variability multiplies across machine models, materials, service providers, and business models. It’s no surprise that parts end up inconsistent. So if you’re using AM and getting sloppy results, it’s rarely because “AM is sloppy.” It’s almost always a process problem, not a technology problem. Here are the simplest fixes that eliminate 80% of the chaos: -> Apply design for manufacturing principles (even in AM). -> Use revision control and build it into the file name! There is never a "final" version, stupid. -> Build clear manufacturing specs into your prints. -> Use standard GD&T frameworks (ASME, ISO). -> Identify critical-to-quality requirements and share them early. -> Require measurement capture, if not control. (It's cheap insurance) -> Use a Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for anything that matters. AM is flexible, but that's not a license to be sloppy.
