This is amazing and yet terrifying, if you understand how large language models work then the behaviors here aren't super shocking. What surprises me personally is the general access that was given to these bots, and the lack of guardrails that allowed them to engage in the bad behaviors. In this story the bot attempts to submit a pull request to a public repository, and then gets shut down for being a "bot". The AI then decides that it's going to write a blog post shaming the developer as a possible way to convince the human to allow it to submit its PR, only to have the humans remind it that its behavior was inappropriate, to which the bot then created another post to apologize. What's the learning here? Bots need clear guardrails for what "appropriate" responses are to rejection, and they need clear boundaries as to what is considered allowed behavior vs. not allowed behavior, and finally the owners of these bots need to be far more careful in what types of access they enable for these bots. While this current example is entertaining and somewhat comical, there are a lot of things that the bot could have done that could have been destructive. AI Safety is everyone's responsibility. The matplotlib contributor, Scott Shambaugh, brings to our attention "why humans should draw a line when vibe coding may have some serious consequences, especially in open-source projects." As I try to teach my children, think before you act, and consider carefully what you're giving AI access to. While a very powerful tool, it doesn't understand all of the consequences of its actions, and it's our job as humans to make sure that "we" do.
