I’m sure there was at least 1 out of those 8,000 people who got let go who would’ve been a good fit for the role they wanted to hire me for. A few of my staff engineer friends got let go so I know this is true. Instead they: - axe everybody - treat them like a cost - rehire where there’s pain What ever happened to employee retention? Why do companies expect us to be loyal to them if they don’t even try to retain us when they have hundreds of billions of dollars? It would be cheaper financially for them to retain one of those 8,000 people. It would be cheaper emotionally for the people who got let go too How do these big tech companies expect people to put their blood, sweat and tears into work while also saying, “yeah we’ll cut you at any moment.” I don’t know. The culture around AI and layoffs has gotten unbelievably toxic

I came across Ed Zitron’s take on token-based pricing vs. subscriptions, and it immediately reminded me of something I learned earlier in my career. While working at UnitedHealth Group, one lesson was clear: compute costs can spiral quickly if systems aren’t designed efficiently. The same principle applies to AI today. Token-based pricing doesn’t just charge for access, it charges for how effectively you use it. That means the real skill isn’t just using AI, it’s understanding how to structure inputs, reduce unnecessary processing, and design smarter prompts. The better we get at preparing and refining what we send into these systems, the more value we unlock while keeping costs under control. Holie Yang liked thisHolie Yang liked thisSo Block has just laid off 4,000 of its 10,000 team members because of AI... and seen its share price jump 24%. But we're not buying the AI excuse. You don't lay off 40% of your staff because of AI magic ✨ Your layoffs happened because you mismanaged your headcount and are cleaning up after 28% avg YoY headcount bloat. Like most tech companies, Block went on a hiring spree when money was cheap and growth projections were fantasy. Now they're correcting that mistake and blaming it on AI because it's a cleaner narrative. Even Sam Altman is saying the quiet part out loud: "A lot of what you're seeing is companies using AI as an excuse to do layoffs they wanted anyway" They didn't replace your job with an agent. They made bad bets, burned cash, and needed to cut headcount. Blaming AI just sounds better to investors than "we mismanaged the business." So why the narrative? Because "we're restructuring for AI" gets a stock bump. "We're cutting costs because revenue missed" doesn't. And it's just a copy paste of what we've seen in the past... Two years ago, Klarna cut 40% of staff, specifically their customer service team, reasoning that AI chatbots could handle it. Stock popped. Investors cheered. Then the customer experience deteriorated. CX scores dropped 40%. Human escalations spiked 300%. They scrambled to rehire 500+ of the 700 cut. Then the CEO admitted they'd over-optimized for cost at the expense of quality. AI makes a great scapegoat. Terrible long-term strategy.

Jack Dorsey just cut Block’s workforce nearly in half — 4,000 people — and the market rewarded it with a 20% stock surge. “The intelligence tools we’re creating, paired with smaller and flatter teams, fundamentally change what it means to build and run a company.” That’s the quote. That’s the worldview. And here’s the uncomfortable part: he might be right — but we still don’t know the most important detail. Who are the 4,000? Engineers? Or mostly marketing, HR, finance, sales, project/program roles, middle management? Because those are two very different stories: - If it’s mostly builders, this is an AI productivity reset. - If it’s mostly support layers, this is an org-design reset. - If it’s mixed, this is a full operating-model reset. Either way, the corporate math has changed. Not because Block is failing — profits are up — but because leadership now believes smaller AI-enabled teams can run the same machine. The real test starts now: can the remaining org actually deliver more, or just run hotter until it breaks? Are we witnessing the future of work — or the beginning of a brutal misread of what AI can really replace?

That's around 4,000 human beings being ejected into one of the hardest job markets I've ever seen. Their stock shot up 23%. We are operating on the wrong incentives. The whole system needs an overhaul.
