Heather Greer Klein reposted thisHeather Greer Klein reposted thisHow does an open source community navigate growth into sustainability? For the Hyku repository platform, it meant doing some hard structural work: mapping how decisions were actually being made, building a decision-making framework with delegated authority, and getting honest about what the community costs to maintain. IOI supported this work through an IMLS-funded project with Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI) and PALCI - Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation. Check out our new post on what we learned — and what it means for any open infrastructure community navigating a similar moment. https://lnkd.in/e_7r9GnqBuilding toward sustainability: Partnering with the Hyku community on governance and fundingBuilding toward sustainability: Partnering with the Hyku community on governance and funding

Heather Greer Klein shared thisIt can be difficult to keep open source development moving forward, without the stopping and starting that come from organizing multi-team sprints. The Samvera Community was able to fill in the gaps between community sprints to complete Valkyrie integration into Hyrax by fundraising to cover contract work. This meant consistent, planned, and reported work from May to October! Heather Greer Klein shared thisI work with the best folks in this community, like Carolyn C.!Heather Greer Klein shared thisThe value of community! Just getting back from Samvera Connect in Philadelphia and am very grateful to this wonderful human-Heather Greer Klein. Heather was hired as Samvera’s first full-time community manager. Samvera is an open source software community that values building software, together, to support open access to cultural heritage and research. The partners knew that we needed to prioritize community management to sustain Samvera’s future and we were so happy to be able to offer Heather this position a few years ago. Heather has made such an impact on communication and keeping all of us on track, building bridges and making connections. As (former)board member, I was so thankful to have a partner to brainstorm and discuss things like onboarding developers, to lowering the barriers to community participation, to how to best approach potential partners, to financial management, and on and on. Cheers to Heather and to all my colleagues in Samvera! #openaccessweek #openaccess #opensourcesoftware #communitymanagement #culturalheritage #digitalhumanities #research #softwaredevelopment #repository

Heather Greer Klein reacted on thisHeather Greer Klein reacted on thisApereo is thrilled to have a new "homegrown" project, MuLTItool Forge, joining the Apereo Incubation Process! As colleges and universities increasingly rely on large enterprise Learning Management Systems (LMS), many institutions face growing challenges in adapting quickly to evolving teaching and learning needs. Faculty and instructional teams are experimenting with AI-enhanced learning, accessibility improvements, discipline-specific learning experiences, new assessment models, and student engagement tools, often faster than commercial LMS vendors can respond. In many cases, institutions are building these solutions independently, solving similar problems in isolation. MuLTItool Forge was created to change that. MuLTItool Forge is a collaborative open source community focused on developing, sharing, and maintaining reusable learning tools that integrate across LMS platforms such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, and Sakai. These tools are built using LTI® (Learning Tools Interoperability), an open standard that enables institutions to add new capabilities to their learning platforms without modifying the core LMS. Rather than waiting on vendor development cycles or recreating tools campus by campus, MuLTItool Forge aims to create a shared space where institutions can openly collaborate on educator-focused solutions designed for interoperability and reuse. #opensource #communitydriven #edtech Thanks to Wilma Hodges, EdD, PMP, UXC, for her assistance on drafting these press releases.Apereo Foundation Welcomes MuLTItool Forge into the Apereo Incubation ProcessApereo Foundation Welcomes MuLTItool Forge into the Apereo Incubation ProcessApereo Foundation

Heather Greer Klein reacted on thisIt's hard to believe that it's 15 years since we started the business. Just 3 of us with an idea that we wanted to do more for Open Access and Open Science, and now - though we got bigger - we still have the same mission!Heather Greer Klein reacted on this🎉 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀! It's been an incredible journey, and we're grateful to everyone who has been part of it. Over the years we've had the pleasure of working with fantastic clients, collaborators, and communities to build open source software that helps make research more open and accessible. From long-standing collaborations with DOAJ and cOAlition S to more recent work with the University of Chicago, Robert Koch Institute, and Ruhr University Bochum, every partnership has helped shape who we are today A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last 15 years. Heather Greer Klein reacted on thisHeather Greer Klein reacted on thisToday after over 28 years of service, our colleague and friend Tom McDonough officially retired from the City of Boston. Tom taught us how to build meaningful lasting relationships, he was committed to serving, he loved providing constituent services, and being in our neighborhoods. Tom gave everyone his time, he took the phone call, sat down to meet, and would always follow-up. As a manager, what a joy it is to see your staff love what they do. We celebrated Tom this week as a team, and what an honor it has been to work, learn, and be in service with Tom throughout the years. Thank you Tom, job well done- enjoy retirement! #Boston #Bospoli #Retired

Heather Greer Klein reacted on thisHeather Greer Klein reacted on thisAt CNI this week, a recurring conversation keeps highlighting a blind spot in how we're supporting library infrastructure amidst tightening budgets and centralized IT. It goes like this: 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿: "We're moving our [open-source software] repository to [Proprietary, closed-source solution]." 𝗠𝗲: "Oh, that looks like great software. What are some reasons for the move?" 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿: "Oh, we can't afford to host and support open-source software anymore." There are a couple latent reasons for this phenomenon: → 𝗥𝗙𝗣 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. These are easiest to get through procurement. → 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗧. The farther your IT gets away from Librarians familiar with vendor lock-in and escalating prices, and general library science, the less informed procurement is going to be with regard to creative solutions that set your institution up for long-term success. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 '𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦' 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 '𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥-𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭', 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵. You can: • Avoid vendor lock-in • Own your data and infrastructure (vendors can host on your cloud account) • Keep your scarce technical resources focused on initiatives that are valuable and top-of-license for them If you refer to the attached diagram, Notch8 supports the entire left half: • We run community office hours and contribute product management and technical coordination to keep our open-source communities healthy. Every feature we build for clients or our hosted solutions goes back to main. • We offer vended (hosted solutions for Hyku, InvenioRDM, Dataverse) for for institutions that need something turnkey but still want a voice in the roadmap. There are lots of great vendors out there who can host high-quality open-source repository solutions for competitive prices. Talk to us, we'll help you figure out which quadrant you're actually in. #Libraries #Opensource #OpenInfrastructure

Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how libraries remain resilient and relevant in rapidly changing information environments. I’m pleased to share my newest course: “The Adaptive Library: Practical Strategies for Future-Ready Librarians.” The goal is to help libraries plan deliberately for the future rather than simply react to change. The course explores practical strategies: from trend literacy and technology evaluation to flexible service design and communicating institutional impact in orderto help libraries adapt their long-term strategy and strengthen organizational resilience. If you're working on planning the future direction of your library, you might find this helpful: https://lnkd.in/edSw73BQ #Libraries #LibraryLeadership #Strategy #FutureOfLibraries

For some small or under-resourced archives, the best practices established by larger institutions can feel out of reach. In this post, Margot Note shares 5 scalable best practices to help you simplify preservation measures, adapt standards, and make steady progress with the resources you have.
