If you are a solo builder, read my 5-step framework to find positioning of any product(& save your 1 year) I scroll through r/startups, r/SaaS, and r/Entrepreneur every week. And I frequently see posts like these: "I spent 8 months building. Launched last week. Zero users. What am I doing wrong?" The answers in the comments are always about marketing, SEO, cold outreach. But that's not the real problem. The real problem shows up in how they position their product. Compare these two: 1) "AI writing assistant that generates content 10x faster" 2) "For solo founders drowning in content tasks who'd rather spend that time building, write once, get a week of posts" The first one competes with every AI writing tool on the market. The second one makes one specific person stop scrolling and think "this is for me" Here’s how you find your positioning. Step by step: 1. Go where your users are already complaining Reddit is a goldmine that most builders ignore. Search r/SaaS, r/freelance, r/Entrepreneur, r/smallbusiness for phrases like "I hate that", "why is there no tool", "I wish something could". These are real people describing real frustrations in their own words. 2. Talk to 5 real people before you touch your landing page Don't ask what they think of your product. Ask what problem they were living with before they found it. Your best positioning is already in one of those answers. 3. Fill in this sentence with real words "[Specific person] who is struggling with [specific frustration] can now [specific outcome] without [the thing they hate doing]" If you have to use the word "users" or "teams" to fill it in, you're not specific enough yet. Go back and talk to more people. 4. Test it on a stranger Show your positioning to someone who has never seen your product. Ask them one question: "Who do you think this is for?" If they can answer clearly and specifically, you've got it. If they say "everyone" or look confused, go back to step one. 5. Let your users write it for you Notion's marketing team called it "an all-in-one workspace" Their users said "I replaced 5 tools and I can finally find my stuff" Guess which one converted better? The users positioned the product better than the team ever could. In 2026, every solo builder has access to the same AI tools, the same no-code platforms, the same distribution channels. The only thing that separates the products people use from the products people forget is this: Someone took the time to deeply understand one specific person's frustration and built their entire positioning around it.
