Most of them trace back to something that was missed during inspection. Not because QC teams aren't doing their jobs, but because you literally cannot see inside sealed packaging with conventional vision systems. We're solving that. Not because it was ideal, but because there was no practical alternative. That limitation is starting to change. Advances in radiographic imaging combined with AI now make it possible to verify internal product integrity in real time, without opening packaging or disrupting operations. This introduces a different way to think about validation. Instead of relying on external indicators, verification can be based on direct evidence of what is inside. That is not an incremental improvement. Growing food, chasing whatever side projects catch my attention, taking the kids camping and to festivals. This is the first summer in a long time I get to plan around my life instead of worrying about carrying a pager, and I want to be present for all of it. To pay for it, I'm running a summer special. I'm a backend and infrastructure engineer, and I'm opening my books at $75/hour for 10–20 hours/week. That's about half my usual rate. In exchange, I'm looking for projects I'd happily work on for fun. My hypothesis is that non-profits, research groups, universities, indie game devs, and early-stage startups are going to be my best matches. After the summer we can revisit market rates; but I'd love to build relationships that extend past it. DM me and tell me what you're working on. I’m trying to extend my savings as long as possible and take some stress off my wife while I focus on my own projects, our little homestead, homeschooling, and enjoying the upcoming Summer in Maine. My preference is as async and low-stress as reasonably possible (status updates and planning meetings are fine!). Not looking to augment staff or any commitments along those lines. I might be interested in fractional roles if we can agree on a schedule that work for both of us and you’re pro “work to live, not live to work”. This is also a great opportunity to explore new domains like embedded Linux, IoT, etc… I love learning and don’t need to earn a *ton* of cash right this moment.

Compiler errors are as good as it gets, better than tests, static analysis or AI code reviews for this specific class of bugs it can detect accurately... Correct me if I'm wrong but in general I think folks are still trying to understand these main threads: 1. LLM models take a large amount of GPU and energy to TRAIN. This means that that energy was spent creating the model and getting the model to be able to do work. 2. LLM models, when you RUN them, take far less compute and energy and can even be run on local computers that you could buy and operate yourself. 3. It's not causing an ecological disaster per question you ask an LLM but there has been an ecological disaster happening to train an LLM. #ai #llm #energy #information

Storage refreshes are supposed to be routine. They rarely are. Every three to five years, new storage arrives with new firmware, new APIs, and new authentication models. Terraform modules fail. Ansible playbooks break. Monitoring has to be rebuilt. What looks like a hardware upgrade turns into an automation redesign project. The problem is not the tools. The problem is that storage platforms are still treated as separate systems with fragmented APIs. In this new post, we break down why storage refreshes consistently undermine infrastructure-as-code and why abstracted, unified infrastructure changes the math entirely. One of the most expensive mistakes in federal cloud programs: rebuilding the same infrastructure patterns from scratch for every new system.\n\nIt's slower. It's inconsistent. And it introduces compliance variance that creates real problems at ATO time.\n\nThe solution is a Terraform module library built for federal cloud environments — where every module encodes not just infrastructure configuration, but the compliance guardrails that come with it.\n\nHow we structure reusable Terraform modules for federal programs:\n\nCompliance encoded at the module level\nEach module includes the controls it satisfies. An S3 module doesn't just create a bucket — it enforces versioning, encryption, access logging, and public access blocking. The compliance posture is a byproduct of using the module correctly.\n\nEnvironment parity without duplication\nDev, staging, and prod environments consume the same modules with different variable sets. Infrastructure drift between environments isn't a risk — it's architecturally prevented. When a control requirement changes, it changes in one place and propagates everywhere.\n\nVersion-pinned, auditable module sources\nModules reference specific versions, not latest. Every module version is tagged, tested, and documented. When an assessor asks what changed between ATO cycles, the answer is in the version history — not someone's memory.\n\nState isolation by boundary\nAccount-per-environment, workspace-per-system, remote state with cross-account access controls. State files are encrypted at rest, access-logged, and version-controlled. Blast radius is scoped, not organization-wide.\n\nPre-deploy policy validation\nBefore any plan applies, OPA/Conftest validates that the configuration satisfies the module's compliance baseline.
