Check it out to see how EZIE is bringing science to our backyards (literally)!Harvey Elliott liked thisNASA’s Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (EZIE), scheduled to launch in late 2024, will image the magnetic fingerprint of the electrical currents that flow in the upper atmosphere and between Earth and the surrounding space. ❇️ ❇️ ❇️ But it’s not just EZIE scientists who will study those connections — you can too. Researchers, students and anyone interested in how Earth interacts with space can be a contributing member of the EZIE team. https://jhuapl.link/n5v Before launch, the EZIE team at Johns Hopkins APL will make and freely distribute approximately 700 magnetometer kits (nicknamed EZIE-Mag) to teachers and students across the United States, with a specific focus on Indigenous schools. These kits will let students build their own science-quality magnetometers. These lunchbox-sized instrument suites allow anyone to make measurements, which will be combined with EZIE’s measurements made from space to finally unlock the mysteries associated with this vast electrical current circuit. “EZIE-Mag provides the mission with a unique opportunity to engage citizen scientists in this important research,” said Dr. Nelli Mosavi-Hoyer, project manager for EZIE at APL. “Measurements made by these kits will be complementary to data collected by the three EZIE spacecraft.” #JHUAPL | #EZIEMission | #HelioBigYear | #heliophysics | NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration | #NASA

I am so grateful for all of the opportunities that I've had to compete for Hamilton throughout my four years as a varsity rower, and especially for every racing opportunity we've had in the Spring 2021 season, culminating in earning silver at the NESCAC Championships. This gratitude especially extends to the recent news that Hamilton Rowing has been selected to race at the 2021 NCAA Championships! I am beyond excited for the chance to represent Hamilton and compete for a national championship. In February, I genuinely did not believe that I would get another chance to race as a collegiate athlete, and have appreciated every day since that I've been able to practice on the water with my amazing and inspiring teammates. Congratulations to my amazing fellow seniors: Perrin Salewood, Pauline Santry (All-NESCAC First Team), Carson Goos, Celine Yam, and William Grimes (All-NESCAC Second Team)! As part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, I worked on the commercialization of a suite of tools which enable researchers to study organic materials, proteins and polymers using Atom Probe Tomography.

Microscopes on Mars

This project was part of the graduate level Space Systems Engineering Design course. Our team built an optical microscope to study phase transitions of perchlorate salts in a Martian environment. A systems engineering approach was used to trace customer needs to system and component functional requirements. Once the individual components were validated the microscope was fully integrated and verified in a low temperature/pressure conditions using thermal vacuum chamber.

As part of the Space Instrumentation (AOSS 584) class, our group built an flew a high altitude balloon payload which took pressure, temperature and humidity measurements of the upper atmosphere.

A 3U Cubesat proposal to conduct GPS occultation measurements in order to study plasma density gradients in the Earth's ionosphere. I conducted to trade study to select the GPS receiver and antennas which we were able to purchase and integrate into a ground station at Peach Mountain Observatory. Also conducted preliminary sizing and layout of subsystems and calculated the telecom link budgets.
