I recently had the privilege of interviewing Timothy Bavington, artist, professor, and color theorist at UNLV, as part of my ongoing thesis research on the intersection of neuroscience and architecture. Our conversation opened up a perspective I didn’t even realize I needed: the age-old debate between drawing and color. Tim described how color has historically been viewed as “cosmetic” or secondary, while drawing was treated as the more serious, structural discipline. Colorists (seen as rebellious) challenged this hierarchy, embracing color’s ability to deceive, disrupt, and reveal. It made me begin questioning how architecture today separates “drawing” and “color”, not just in representation, but in built form. - What aspects of architecture act as drawing? - Which function as color? - How do these modes shape feeling, perception, and context? - Are we, as designers, relying too heavily on one over the other? Tim’s insights reminded me that color is not ornamental, it’s neurological. It shapes mood, memory, orientation, and emotional response just as profoundly as form, proportion, and light. In the same way, drawing is not merely representational, it’s a way of structuring how we think, perceive, and build meaning. I’m grateful for Tim’s generosity, clarity, and his willingness to push my thinking further. Conversations like this continue to deepen the lens through which I approach my thesis: understanding how the sensory and emotional dimensions of space influence human well-being.
