Most SDRs and AEs don’t lose deals because of weak product knowledge. They lose deals because they rush the moment. Speed turns into pressure. Pressure turns into panic. Panic kills deals long before a competitor ever shows up. I’ve been around salespeople for a long time now, and the people who rise fastest all learn the same skill early. Patience isn’t the opposite of urgency. Patience is how you create leverage. Your job isn’t to unload features. Your job is to understand the pain someone is living with and the outcome they can’t reach alone. Prospects don’t care how sharp your pitch is. You position yourself, read the energy, commit when the window opens. Every rep who tries to manufacture perfect timing ends up paddling in circles. Great reps aren’t in a hurry. Great reps don’t chase. Great reps turn pain into clarity and clarity into momentum that buyers trust. If you want a long career in this game, stop trying to impress people. Start trying to understand them. It’s the shift that turns an order-taker into an operator. It’s the shift that stops you from getting ghosted. It’s the shift that leads to real deals that stick. The reps who win aren’t the fastest. They’re the ones who know when not to move.

If you can hire SDRs and they can transition into closing roles relatively quick... Don't hire AEs externally. Just hire more SDRs and promote them faster. If you hire external AEs you increase your risk of $180k+ hires, big time. Obviously this won't work for MM or Enterprise sales motions... But if you're selling to SMBs and run a simple sales process, make your life a hell of a lot easier and just nail hiring & onboarding for 1 role. Let the cream rise to the top, promote them fast. They'll ramp immediately and source their own deals. You can run this play for a longgggg time.
