Ten years ago, I joined
Nexcess.net. Today is my last day, as CTO of Nexcess and Liquid Web.
In that time, we built. Products. Platforms. Teams. A managed hosting business that grew organically and through acquisitions, consolidations, and the kind of software, platform, and messy plumbing work nobody puts on a slide. I'm proud of the work. More importantly, I'm proud of the people who did it with me.
Here are my honest thoughts on that journey:
The work was hard. Engineering software and platforms in the multi-tenant hosting space, at fleet scale, is unforgiving in ways you only learn by living it. Outages cost real dollars, but more importantly, real sweat equity by humans: birthdays, anniversaries, family vacations become part of the incident channels. Migrations don't go to plan. Customers don't care about your reorgs. The teams I had the privilege of leading shipped through all of it, often quietly, often without enough recognition. I find myself incredibly humbled and honored to have worked with teams that sacrifice, quietly, for each other and our customers, without hesitation.
I'm confidently leaving the technology org in better shape than I found it, which is all I ever ask of my teams. I am proud of our journey together. Better architecture, better practices, better people. That credit belongs to the software and platform engineers, front-line support, and leaders who actually do the work. I tried to clear the road and get into the weeds with y'all along the journey, and I'm thankful for your grace to allow me to be part of that with you.
To the customers who trust us with their workloads, their businesses, and in many cases their livelihoods: that trust was never lost on me. Hosting is one of those industries where the work is invisible until it isn't, and you stayed with us across migrations, rebrands, ownership changes, and the inevitable hard nights. That trust is the most valuable thing this business has. I tried hard never to spend it lightly. Thank you for trusting in our organization, and on no small amount of occasions, affording me your personal trust to show up when it mattered most.
To everyone at

Nexcess.com portfolio: Thank you. You're the best part of the last decade. We built a Michigan love story together, bringing
Nexcess.net and Liquid Web under one roof and growing it into a global organization with a wider, more diverse set of leaders and brands. That story is incomplete and now in your hands. Solve for the outcome, for our customers. I trust in you.
To the founders and leaders who entrusted us with what they built, inside the
