Gerald Ryan posted thisI see a lot of concern around AI—will it take our jobs, disrupt society, and so on. These are very valid questions but I see few people diving into the details of how it actually works, the math, the architecture, the capabilities and nature of it all, learning, studying, being curious and hungry for knowledge. Whether, good or bad, it is coming and it is here so I want to know all about it. I'm neither an evangelist nor a doomsayer. We'll see, and do buckle up, though I also have to admit it, it kinda just helped me out of a pinch. My steam based home heating system went out on a cold Sunday evening and nobody was available even for emergency service. AI was there and helped me figure out what to do on the spot without breaking anything. so it's here to stay and can do very good things. That doesn't mean there aren't also risks, including big risks, but how many people actually know how it works, that "attention is all you need", or even what matrix multiplication is (and why that's why NVIDIA's stock is through the roof)? learning and understanding can be hard, but is fun and very rewarding

Gerald Ryan posted thisI love learning and being challenged. My mentor, a retired PWC partner, says he would always keep me in such a role. That is why I've appreciated Lambda School. There is truly never a dull moment, from the very first week building a foundation in html, css and git, to a week of vanilla JavaScript, straight to React and supporting libraries, onto the back end, then to two months of computer science in python covering such topics as data structures, algorithms and big O notation, and lastly onto Labs for 2 months where in a team we build real working products for real organizations. We also have access to various annexes (e.g. CompSci in C or back end Java vs Node), and access to other core tracks (e.g. Data Science, iOs) at no extra cost.

I connected with HDR colleagues from across the world, and my favorite (and most common) reaction was: "I wish I had this when I was in college!" Recruitment was never the goal, and still isn't, but the program naturally highlighted the curiosity and passion of incredible students who dedicated hours to learning about HDR, the industry, and our teams. How could I not put the spotlight on these brilliant individuals? Huge shoutout to Chris LaTuso for being my mentor for the poster! One habit I had to consciously break as a developer was being emotionally attached to dev tools for debugging. Browser devtools. Console logs. Local repros. Perfect environments. They feel powerful. They feel safe. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: no tester will send you devtools logs. no client will screenshot your Network tab. no user knows (or cares) which tool you debug with. What you get in production is: “the app is slow” “it didn’t work” “it failed yesterday” That’s it. cURL still matters. It answers a narrow question: “Can I reach this endpoint?” But production problems are never that simple. That’s why observability isn’t a luxury, it’s a detachment. You stop depending on tools that only exist on your machine. Logs tell you what happened. Metrics tell you how often and how bad. Traces don’t just show where the system broke, they show how it broke. Without that, debugging becomes archaeology. Guessing. Replaying. Hoping. With observability, the system explains itself, even when no one can reproduce the issue for you. The real shift isn’t choosing better tools. It’s accepting that production doesn’t care how you debug locally. So the real question is: if the only thing you get is “it failed”, can your system answer back? #observability #debugging #backend #softwareengineering #devops #systemDesign #reliability
