Most dev jobs advertise "autonomy." Then you join and need 3 approvals to change a button color. At Sticky Tooling, I pick the architecture. I pick the stack. I decide when something needs a migration. Last month I moved our entire hosting to Laravel Cloud. The conversation with Marc Cornelius : Me: "Our servers are costing us too much time. I want to move to Laravel Cloud." Marc: "Will it be better?" Me: "Faster deploys, less maintenance, better scaling." Marc: "Do it." That was it. No change advisory board. No 6-week evaluation. → I planned the migration strategy → Moved projects one by one → Handled DNS, environments, pipelines → Clients didn't even notice (that's the point) Here's what most companies get wrong about autonomy: It's not "do whatever you want." It's "we trust you to make the right call, and own the result." When a deploy breaks at 9pm, it's on me. No blaming the process. No hiding behind a ticket. Small team. Real ownership. Actual consequences. What does "autonomy" actually look like at your job, buzzword or reality?

If you’re using: - React Server Components (even without explicit Server Functions), or - Next.js App Router (v14.3.0-canary.77+, 15, 16), or - Anything bundling RSC (Vite/Parcel plugins, React Router RSC, RedwoodJS, Waku, etc.), you should be asking: - Are our RSC payloads being deserialized safely? - Which versions are actually running in production? - How fast can we roll to the patched versions? Wiz is seeing ~39% of cloud environments exposed to these CVEs. This isn’t an edge case; it’s the mainstream stack. I’ve worked with some tough systems in my career, but nothing has tested my patience like developing an Ember addon (or made me love the React ecosystem even more). (If you’re not familiar, Ember was one of the first SPA frameworks. think Rails-flavored JS. Fun fact: LinkedIn is built on Ember! 🐹 ) Developing a React library is like cooking dinner in your own kitchen: you control the equipment, the ingredients, and the timing. Ember addons are like prepping a meal someone else will finish in their kitchen, with their utensils, on their stove, and you still have to put everything back in the exact cupboards Ember wants everything to go in. When developing an Ember addon, there's a lot that can go sideways: => Code lives in addon/, but needs to be re-exported in app/ or it won’t render. Yup, just about everything 😩 => Template modifiers (sort of like a custom React hook + useEffect but scoped to a DOM node) need re-exporting too, or you’ll be lost trying to figure out why nothing’s firing. => Dependencies have to satisfy the resolver and the dependencies required by the consuming app’s Ember version, or the consuming app will break. => Get ready for bugs that only happen in the real app but never in your dummy app! => And if you get lost, there isn't much documentation out there, so you'll need to spend valuable time spelunking through source code, community threads, and discord. Ember addons aren’t just your code. They’re Ember’s conventions, your code, and the consuming app’s quirks, all woven together! All that being said, I really respect Ember and what it's strict conventions have taught me over the years. Whenever I'm back in React though, I love it just a little bit more each time!
