There's no one way to PMM. I dislike the argument that the best PMMs "come from x background" or "all do this one thing." There are different types of PMMs, and each can be successful depending on the circumstances. You have: 1. Analytical PMM: Love numbers, processes, and stats. Needs firm evidence before making any decision 2. Schmoozer PMM: Social butterflies beloved by other departments. Sees problems in the org and fixes them. 3. The Vibes PMM (Me): Sees PMMing as an art. More interested in creating compelling content than frameworks and checking boxes. ...and a thousand other different varieties. There's no one mold for being the perfect PMM. It's about identifying your strengths and determining how you can best contribute value to your org. And a great PMM team usually has a blend of these different personalities. On our team, Ben Price 🧂☕️and I are opposites. Ben is the biggest process-oriented PMM I've ever met. I'm constantly yelling at him to stop being a nerd. But I guess once in a blue moon, he makes a good point. The "all great PMMs do this" mantra is BS. You can kill it by being your own little special snowflake.
