Frederick May reposted thisFrederick May reposted thisThe delivery of Disney Cruise Lines first ship, the Disney Magic, was delayed multiple times. It was no one’s fault, just a very complicated construction process. Since the inaugural sailing dates had been previously and loudly announced, each delay required rebooking guests along with all of their travel arrangements. It also required finding housing for the crew members that had arrived in Italy and other logistical adjustments. These two sentences don’t do justice to the challenges, the costs, the stress and the reputational damage that were caused by the delays. The combination of these issues cascaded into the early operation of the ship. It took us a couple of months or a little more before we were delivering the experience we were capable of. The pressure to get the ship in the water was understandable. After spending hundreds of millions, there was a strong desire to start producing revenue. Hence the aggressive and ultimately erroneous launch dates. When it came to the second ship, the Disney Wonder, we had a good sense of when the ship would be completed, but we intentionally set the inaugural sailing date with a comfortable cushion. Because of this we had the opportunity to bring her into South Hampton, England for a spectacular public relations event. We also had the opportunity to bring on crew in an organized manner, train them on-station and confirmed guest reservations stayed confirmed. After arriving in Cape Canaveral were able to do a couple of shake-down and travel agent cruises before putting her in full service. As with the first time there was significant pressure from corporate to start earning revenue as soon as possible, but with memories still fresh from the Disney Magic delays, we never let them know of our scheduling cushion. I am normally a fan of transparency, but not this time. I distinctly remember when our leadership team was discussing establishing a delivery date for the ship, someone said the following: “You don’t build a great brand because you put it in service two weeks earlier.” The guest ratings from the initial voyage of the Disney Wonder were some of the highest we had ever seen and we more than made up the “lost” revenue with the demand for reservations that followed. I think the wisdom of the statement referenced above has broad applicability. You can’t rush to greatness. #DIsneyCruise

It’s the fragile, unspoken alliance between exactly two people: An HRIS Analyst named [Dave] who knows exactly which hidden, undocumented button to click when payroll breaks. An HR Generalist named [Angie] who is the only person alive who remembers why a specific workflow was built that way back in 2019 (because "the VP at the time had a very specific phobia of automated notifications”). One person has the back-end logic; the other person has the ancient business context lore. Without this duo, the entire system collapses into a black hole of duplicate employee profiles and unmapped data fields. I’m not spending my Sunday evening mentally triaging my project list or bracing for a Monday morning fire drill. While we give so much of ourselves to our careers, there is a whole lot of life happening outside those 40 (or more) hours a week. I’m entering this next phase so incredibly grateful for my family, my friends, my community, and the joy that comes outside of what I do for a paycheck. Don’t get it twisted though. While I enjoy some well-earned R&R, that doesn’t mean I’m not ready for what’s next! Why it's being afraid." ☠️ Captain Jack Sparrow himself shared these wise words with me during a character meet & greet at Disneyland long ago, but they have taken on a new meaning now. My role with Disney was recently eliminated, and for the first time in many years, I am searching for new employment. Embarking on this journey, I have been excited, nervous, curious, and, yes, afraid, but I know that apprehension is just the first step in finding the courage to seek and embrace new opportunities. I am grateful for my time with Disney, and forever thankful to the incredible leaders, partners, and friends I worked with over the years. From a "fun college job" to a full-fledged HR career, I had a truly magical experience, and I know those lessons have prepared me well for the road ahead. I'm looking to the horizon with bravery. As Walt Disney said, keep moving forward!

Despite the heat, masked skyscraper vigilantes, and NOT being invited to Taylor Swift’s wedding (I’m sure it was just an oversight), I had a blast. A HUGE thank you to NBCUniversal for the interview trip of a lifetime. Not only did I get to interview for a job I’m really excited about AT 30 ROCKEFELLER PLAZA, but I got a bonus tour of from the amazing Rayna Colacrai (Thank you again Rayna!!! You did the NBC Pages proud 🥹) When in New York, you gotta see the sights, so I treated myself to a few incredible shows, and my family even flew up to join me for Schmigadoon! (Which is, of course, incredible. Like, truly. Better than it has any business being.) On my flight home now, and all I can think about is how grateful I am to be able to take this little adventure. (Ok, that and whether I picked the right tie… 🤔👔) Wishing all my fellow #Funemployed friends on the job market your own adventure!

There’s a predictable rhythm in the talent market that shows up every year. March and April. Bonuses hit bank accounts. Deferred compensation vests. And suddenly those long-quiet LinkedIn profiles start to stir. This isn’t just coincidence. It’s economics, psychology and timing. For employees, bonus season often creates a natural inflection point: • “I stayed for the payout; now what?” • “Is this role still helping me learn and grow?” • “Do I feel energized and conneted or just relieved?” For employers, this period can reveal the true strength of engagement and retention. If large numbers of people leave immediately after bonuses are paid, it’s rarely about the cash. It’s often about career path clarity, leadership connection, workload sustainability, or whether employees feel seen, heard and appreciated long after the compensation cycle passes. The best organizations don’t just design competitive bonus programs they design compelling reasons to stay after the bonus clears. And the most thoughtful leaders use this season as a listening moment because retention isn’t tested in January when payouts are pending.
