The places I return to all have one thing in common. Something is always being made. A seam is being sewn. Leather is being cut. Clay is being shaped. Ceramics are being painted by hand. Metal is being filed. People gather. They watch. They ask questions. Conversations begin. New ideas emerge. That rhythm has given me clarity. SICULI will be a living creative space where making is visible, conversations happen naturally, and every visit offers the opportunity to discover something new. The pieces people bring home will carry the memory of where they came from, who made them, and the moment they first came to life. Sandra T. Finkelstein shared thisFIELD NOTE #3: THE COMMUNITY BUILD Ragusa, Sicily As I continue exploring Sicily for SICULI, one theme keeps emerging. Every introduction opens another door. I walked into a palazzo simply to explore and found a fashion show preparing for that evening. A question to the director led to an invitation to return as her guest, a front-row seat at ONE Fashion Catania, and an introduction to one of the city’s oldest shoe designers, who continues to create remarkable small-batch collections. In Ragusa, a visit to Il Barocco, an enoteca that has evolved into a thoughtfully curated concept store, became a conversation with Manolo about ideas, creativity, and what we might build together through SICULI. The community forming around SICULI keeps growing, but that’s not what matters most. It’s bigger than the artisans I’m discovering. It’s the relationships I’m building, the creativity being shared, and the stories I’m privileged to help carry forward. I’m beginning to realize that I’m not just creating SICULI. I’m discovering what it can become through every conversation, every introduction, and every shared idea. Finkelstein shared thisFIELD NOTE #2: SICILY’S PLACE IN THE STORY OF ITALY Catania, Sicily This week I found myself asking a question I hadn’t considered before: Where does Sicily fit within the broader story of Italian culture, craftsmanship, and identity? When people speak about Italy, they often speak about Tuscany, Milan, Rome, or the Amalfi Coast. The South is frequently grouped together as though it were one thing. Yet Sicily feels different. While exploring Sicily, I attended the World Hope Forum, whose focus this month was Italy. Architects, farmers, entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders shared inspiring work taking place across the country and throughout the South. Calabria and Sardinia were well represented, yet Sicily was largely absent from the conversation. It left me wondering where Sicily fit within the broader story of Italian culture, craftsmanship, and identity. Sicily has been shaped by centuries of exchange, influence, and stewardship, each leaving a mark that remains visible today in its architecture, language, food, and decorative arts. What emerged is not a single identity but something layered, complex, and entirely its own. The more people I meet, the more I sense a quiet pride in that distinction. One conversation in particular stayed with me. Principessa Carine Valsecchi Gangi spoke passionately about Sicilian craftsmanship and decorative arts. She described Sicily as a place where beauty and craft have long defined luxury, home to some of the finest palazzi in Europe and artisans whose work continues to shape the island’s cultural identity. It made me think differently about Sicily’s place within Italy’s cultural landscape. The island is often discussed separately from the rest of Italy, yet its influence seems impossible to ignore. Its architecture, decorative arts, craftsmanship, and cultural layers feel woven into the fabric of the country itself. The more I learn, the more the question stays with me. Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in Sicily’s ability to absorb so many influences while remaining entirely itself. I’m still thinking about that. Finkelstein shared thisFIELD NOTE #1: BUILDING SICULI Palermo, Sicily For those just joining me on this journey, SICULI is an exploration of Sicily’s ancestral beauty through craftsmanship, cultural discovery, a cinematic collection, and the people whose work is guided by purpose, artistry, and a deep connection to place. I’m spending five weeks traveling across Sicily, embedding myself in the people, places, craftsmanship, and history that form the world of SICULI. Four days in, I’ve explored the laboratory and works of renowned ceramicist, Patrizia Italiano, and had the privilege of hearing her story firsthand. I’ve spent time with master tailor Carmelo Crimi and his son Mauro, explored vintage and antique markets, and discovered makers such as Irene Forte, whose products draw directly from Sicily’s land, ingredients, and traditions. I’ve also wandered through Palermo’s palazzos, churches, markets, and hidden corners, absorbing the extraordinary layers of history that surround everyday life here. Standing beneath the mosaics of Monreale, I was reminded that Sicily’s beauty was built layer by layer. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, and Bourbons all left something behind. Different civilizations, different eras. Each contributed to and preserved the richness of the island we experience today. Four days in, one thing is becoming clear: Sicily is not simply a source of inspiration. Its people, craftsmanship, history, and cultural layers are inseparable from the world I hope to create through SICULI. One thing I didn’t expect was how many people I’ve met who chose Sicily. Writers, photographers, content creators, entrepreneurs. People from elsewhere who felt pulled toward the island and eventually built a life here. I’m beginning to understand why. Sandra T. Finkelstein shared thisI keep coming back to this because the numbers are hard to ignore. Women 50+ control ~70–80% of U.S. wealth and drive ~60%+ of consumer spending. And by 2030, they’ll represent one of the largest and fastest-growing consumer groups globally. And they’re still growing as digital shoppers. That alone should reshape how we think about retail. But what’s more interesting is how they buy: • higher spend per piece • lower return rates • real loyalty when they connect • longer lifetime value (decades, not seasons) From a business standpoint, this is one of the most stable, valuable customers you could design for. And then there’s what they actually value: • pieces with provenance and story • craft, texture, and material integrity • ease with intention (not over-designed, not careless) • environments that feel considered, atmospheric, worth lingering in It’s a different rhythm that is slower, more intentional, emotionally connected, and more discerning. Finkelstein posted thisIt’s only Wednesday and already 4 incredible women I just met have put SICULI on an upward trajectory by opening their minds, hearts, and resources to support a founder's mission. Looking back, it’s actually been many others since our inception who have fueled this journey. We need to stand by and support each other now more than ever! I just finished a sobering piece by Joanne Lipman about the "erasure" of women in the professional world. As we look to support one another, we have to recognize the systemic shifts currently threatening our progress. 5 Key Threats to Women in the Workforce & Democracy: 🎯 The Scrubbing of Identity: Organizations are pre-emptively removing words like “women” and “female” from grant applications and reports to avoid political targeting or losing federal funding. 🙊 The "Silent" Success: Even companies with excellent track records in promoting women are now refusing to speak publicly about their progress, fearing they will become the next target for activists. 🪓 Institutional Rollbacks:From purging senior female officers in the military to the U.S. refusing to sign international gender equality principles for the first time in 70 years, decades of progress are being dismantled. ⛽️💡Hostile Narratives: There is a growing rhetorical push claiming that women in the workforce create "unhealthier children" or that offices need more "masculine energy," signaling a desire to return to exclusionary "traditional" structures. 🚨A Warning for Democracy: Reversing gender equality is a primary feature of the "autocrat’s playbook." When women are erased from the narrative, injustices go unnoticed, and democratic stability is often the next to fall. We cannot let ourselves be silenced. Support starts with the small stuff: reach out, check-in, and keep the doors open for one another. (So go on, respond to your sister’s email or text! She’s waiting for you). “When women mobilize, countries are more likely to be egalitarian democracies. That’s why authoritarians fear women. Adriano Goldschmied was a pioneer, an innovator, and someone I was fortunate to call a friend. I had the honor of collaborating with Adriano on our brand, HALE at Amazon, where I witnessed what made him truly extraordinary — not just his genius, but his generosity. He was so gracious with his time and talent, and brought an infectious vision to everything he touched. He saw potential in every project and elevated everyone around him. The last time we spoke, just a few months ago, I shared my vision for SICULI with him. His response was pure Adriano, “BRAVA, Sandra!” He loved the concept, immediately offered contacts, and cheered me on the way he always did. That was who he was. Always generous, always supportive, always building others up. Ours was a friendship of deep respect and history, and I will dearly miss his creativity, his energy, and everything he brought to the world of denim and far beyond, right to the end. May his memory be for a blessing. Rest in peace, caro Adriano.💙

Her approach, grounded in research and real customer behavior, brought a level of clarity and depth to experiential retail that we don’t often see. In just one hour, she and the panel delivered an incredible amount of insight. Thank you to Ghalia Boustani. Ph.D, Richard Honiball, Elisa Servais, PhD, RDI , and Alex Betts for such a thoughtful and substantive discussion. What stayed with me most is how this directly connects to what I’m building with SICULI. The future of retail isn’t about choosing between physical and digital—it’s about designing how they work together. Digital draws you in. It builds context, curiosity, and expectation. Physical delivers the emotional experience—the moment of discovery, the texture, the surprise. When those two are in sync, something powerful happens. With SICULI, I’m thinking deeply about how to create that interplay: bringing people in through the narrative, then surprising them once they step inside the space—inviting them into a slower, more immersive experience that unfolds over time. Not just a world to shop, but a journey to step into (vision below). And yet, it was somewhat of a double-take to realize that the two share much in common: desire, care, tending, listening and observing, giving it time, memory and narrative. Caterina Moruzzi and I, as part of a book we are writing on creativity, had the audacious idea of convening 9 invited participants to work through and with a material engagement on the "making of creativity." Our bet was that by asking makers that intimately engage with matter (in the Jane Bennett sense of matter, but also in the Baradian tradition of "matter matters") while asking questions about how (and if) creativity can be defined, we could uncover gestures, tacit knowledge, constellations of meaning (in the Adorno sense). In our planning, questions about AI were prominent, and yet, in our 2 days AI receded to the background, it became just another technology of making — even though we were all keenly aware that it is claiming a bigger piece of that equation. We were surrounded by Jacquard looms dating to the 1800s and still-operating weaving/knitting machines that were enmeshed with their operators. They could not operate without their idiosyncrasies and quirks (and maybe quarks too) being tended. Maybe these machines in the next room eased our existential anxieties about the "machine," or maybe all our participants were so engaged in conversation, manipulating clay and wax, seeing the horse hair used on an intricate weave by one of our weavers reappear on the cello bow. Maybe it was the pure presence and engagement of all the participants (a state of flow?) that made questions about AI banal and irrelevant. What bonded us was a desire to engage and share the delight (and the pain) that the creative process entails with peers who were there because of the love of what they do and their desire to share that love and its complexity. We plan to continue these gatherings and probe deeper into how techne makes us and we make techne and what is the ethics that inevitably underlies any act of making. This experiment could not have been made possible without the support of the RKEI Fund of Edinburgh College of Art, BRAID UK the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the ONASSIS FOUNDATION for flying over one of our participants, and the generosity and curiosity of Doric Shipbrokers S.A. Every frame was intentionally directed- from the styling, beauty, lighting, composition, and expressions to the overall mood of the campaign. AI was simply the medium that helped bring the vision to life. The question isn't, "Is it AI?" It's "Does it tell a compelling visual story?" Most material innovation fails long before the first prototype. I’m often brought in after teams have spent months (or years) developing a fabric or knit concept that looks promising—but can’t scale, manufacture, or perform consistently in the real world. In one recent engagement with a furniture company, the issue wasn’t creativity. It was feasibility. The material hadn’t been evaluated against: - Machine capability - Yarn behavior at scale - Cost and supply-chain constraints - End-use performance requirements for upholstery (commercial or residential) Once those variables were aligned, the path forward became clear—what to advance, what to stop, and where to redirect resources. The result: - Fewer iterations, lower risk, and a realistic roadmap and budget to get the product to market. Material strategy isn’t about guessing.
